Chelsea now exploring move for Julian Alvarez

Chelsea are exploring a possible move to sign Atlético Madrid centre-forward Julián Álvarez this summer, according to Nicolo Schira.

After producing an outstanding 85 goal contributions in 122 appearances for boyhood club River Plate, Álvarez earned comparisons to the legendary Sergio Agüero and has arguably lived up to those expectations since moving to Europe.

His prolific form in Argentina earned him a move to Manchester City, where he marked his competitive debut by scoring against Liverpool in the 2022 Community Shield.

Although he often played second fiddle to Pep Guardiola’s first-choice striker Erling Haaland, the Argentine remained highly dependable whenever given an opportunity. He finished his spell at the Etihad with 55 goal contributions before securing a big-money move to Atlético Madrid in the summer of 2024.

Álvarez has continued to thrive in the Spanish capital, registering 66 goal contributions across his first two seasons. That includes an impressive 29 in all competitions during the recently concluded 2025-26 campaign.

Audacious swoop

His consistent form has made him one of the most sought-after forwards this summer, with reports via Football Talk revealing that Arsenal are ready to offer Viktor Gyokeres plus £59m to sign Alvarez.

It appears Chelsea are now looking to trump the Gunners to sign Alvarez, as Schira claims that the Blues are exploring the possibility of signing the 26-year-old this summer.

The journalist adds that the Blues enquired about the conditions of a potential deal for the Argentine during talks with Atlético in London over Nicolas Jackson, who is also of keen interest to Aston Villa.

It was a difficult day for Alvarez in Atlético’s Sunday La Liga clash against Villarreal, where he made only 12 touches. He was jeered all through the game by supporters until he was substituted in the 66th minute for Marc Pubill before heading straight to the tunnel at full time.

When asked about Alvarez’s walk-off to the tunnel, Diego Simeone said, ‘The people at the club told me that the club decided not to approach the stands and its people.

‘The decision was made by the club to move him away and separate him so that he can come to the dressing room.’

While it is unclear whether Atlético would be open to selling Alvarez, Chelsea could test the waters by submitting an audacious bid well above his £102m Transfermarkt valuation as they look to beat Arsenal to signing him this summer.
