Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement to sign Chelsea centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo this summer, according to David Ornstein.
After Tottenham’s disappointing 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United last Saturday, Roberto De Zerbi said in his post-match interview that he could be down one centre-back option, as Kevin Danso has asked to leave the club, along with Richarlison and Pape Matar Sarr.
He said, ‘Danso came to me two days ago, and he said he wants to leave.’
As a result, the club have explored the market for additional cover at the back as they look to navigate a nightmarish start to the season, having lost and failed to score in their first two league matches for the first time since the 1974-75 season.
Danso has also completed a loan move with an obligation to buy with Sunderland, which has further heightened the need for the club to accelerate a move for a defender, and Chelsea’s Adarabioyo has been earmarked to step in for the Austrian international.
A deal has now swiftly been sealed, according to David Ornstein, who claims that Tottenham have reached an agreement to sign Tosin from Chelsea on a permanent transfer.
Ornstein adds that the London-born, 6ft 5in centre-back has also agreed to personal terms with Spurs and has been granted permission to undergo his medical with the club.
Bargain deal
In a separate report, football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano says the fee for the 28-year-old is an initial £7m, plus add-ons.
A direct transfer between senior first-team players of the two London clubs would be their first in 17 years. Carlo Cudicini was the last to make that switch, departing Chelsea for Spurs on a free transfer in January 2009.
Jude Soonsup-Bell also made the same switch in 2023 at 19, but his move was different. The centre-forward, who now plays for Port FC in Thailand, left the Blues’ academy for Tottenham’s Under-21 development side rather than moving directly between the clubs’ senior teams.
With Danso now confirmed to have joined Sunderland, Tosin’s arrival would give De Zerbi four available centre-back options: Micky van de Ven, Jan-Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi.
Tosin joined Chelsea in the summer of 2024 on a free transfer from Fulham. He has made 70 appearances for the Blues in all competitions but has not appeared or featured in any matchday squad this season under Xabi Alonso, leading to his exit from the club.
