4 Things We Took From Liverpool’s Defeat To Fulham

By on December 6, 2011

Liverpool dropped 3 vital points against Fulham at Craven Cottage last night in a controversial game which saw poor refereeing and Liverpool hitting the post on countless of occasions. Here are four things i took from the game:

1. Bad Refereeing Still Plagues the League

Maybe it’s just me, but there were so too many ridiculous refereeing decisions in the game. Liverpool were denied a strong penalty claim when Charlie Adam was hauled to the ground following a Philippe Senderos tackle, which was adjudged to have been outside of the box, when replay’s suggested it was inside.

Along with that, Luis Suarez had a fantastic goal ruled out by referee Kevin Friend. The Uruguayan had worked the oppourtunity and finished brilliantly, with replays suggesting that the South American was indeed onside when the ball was played. Jay Spearing was also on the wrong side of a bad decision, after his tackle on Mousa Dembele earned him a straight red card, even when the Englishman managed to get the ball cleanly. Another questionable decision that went against Liverpool.

2. Jay Spearing Might Just Be Ready

Spearing, brought in to replace long-term casualty Lucas Leiva, worked really hard to close down Fulham’s midfield yesterday night and should be applauded for his efforts. He was unlucky to be sent off 72 minutes into the game and Spearing distributed the ball well throughout the match.

Jay Spearing has been waiting on the sidelines for a long time now and he might just be the man to step up in during Lucas Leiva’s absence. Although it looks like he’ll be suspended for 3 games now unless Liverpool win an appeal.

3. Daniel Agger is a Consistent Performer

Daniel Agger seems to get better by the game, and the Danish defender produced another fine display at the heart of the Liverpool defence. But could he be the right man for the defensive midfielder spot in Jay Spearing and Lucas’ absence? It doesn’t sound like a bad idea. He breaks play down well, passes adequately and even has a rocket of a shot from his left foot.

Agger might just be the man whom can solve Liverpool’s short term defensive midfielder woes, with Jamie Carragher preferably coming back into the side at centre back alongside our Slovakian no-nonsense defender Martin Skrtel.

4. Our Midfield Looks Very Disjointed

In Jordan Henderson, Charlie Adam and Jay Spearing we had a reasonable midfield, but they struggled to work together against Fulham. Charlie Adam was doing his own thing, Henderson showed glimpses of vision, creativity and managed to hit the post and Jay Spearing simply chased balls down trying to break up play. But they didn’t work as a unit.

And don’t forget, we learned Andy Carroll is about as much use as an ashtray on a moterbike.

Henderson was the only one of the three central midfielders that had a good game. Adam kept giving the ball away and just kept conceding space to Fulham by retreating towards our box any time a Fulham midfielder had the ball, while Spearing was largely anonymous. The two of them, plus Carroll, were lucky to still be on the pitch past the 60 minute mark where the first sub typically occurs…

People are only saying Henderson played better because he had a match moment where he hit the post. Aside from that he didn’t do much whilst Adam didn’t play as well as previous games was still the main forward force alongside Suarez and bellamy.

The four lessons I take from this match are…

    1. January will be a big month in terms of transfers. A striker who scores goals is needed whilst an argument can quite easily be made that another central mid and two wingers could still be needed; downing has done a job but has not offered the guile to be anything more than he has hi entire career.

    2. Our defence is becoming a dominant unit. If there is a chink it comes from Glen. Skrtel looks a completely different animal alongside Agger.

    3. Refs continue to lose touch with the game as years go by. Gone are the days of Collina whereby you would find a ref that had past experience in competitive football (semi or pro) and it means that the letter of the law gets skewed in amongst variables of an actual game.

    4. Calls that Suarez is a diver are wide of the mark. He plays like Dalglish yet no person would brandish him a cheat. The definition of diving could be attributed to Larsson against Wolves, no contact just pure simulation. Suarez on the other hand does get touch in all cases, but his eccentricity allows people to make such outlandish claims.

Carroll Henderson and Adam, are just NOT good enough for Accrington Stanley, never mind Liverpool FC!.

YOU Kenny needs to stop buying CR*P!!. Your persistance of trying to justify your CR*P, buys, is costing Liverpool FC, BIG TIME!!!

Actually I think you’re a manc. Quite plausible since they spend more time following Liverpool than their own club.

When are Liverpool going to stop moaning. Senderos was outside or on line. Spearing made a reckless tackle and paid the consequences. The offside decision was tight tbut there is no photo looking along the line. yes, Fulham got the rub of the green for once, but in my expreience they normally go in favour of the bigger clubs: this game made a refreshing change

1.We desparely needs a poacher,a striker who is right place at right time, someone like gomez, cavani, hernandez
2.We dont need any ‘non goal scoring midfieldes’.we have nough of them
3.I dont know what problem kenny is with maxi, but he is an absolute must.a goal scoring winger, does we have any?
4.Carrol needs to go.kenny has given even poulsen nough chances,so i have no prob with AC.but certainly, teams prerformance is above all, even above managers preference(or ego?)

@RednRed, his team selection and tactics were fine when we beat Chelsea, don’t bother supporting a team only when they win, it doesn’t work that way.

@Dunlopsrule….Stop smelling the beans,m8. we were playing Fulham (no disrespect here), who had only won two games at home, all season, in all competitions. We were expected to beat Fulham, just ask the bookies, but King Kenny knows all, prefering (donkey) Carroll, to Maxi is a total a total disgrace. It seems that the reward for scoring, against Chelsea, is the bench!!!, some motivation eh?.

your a clown sir, maxi has done okay lately, if he starts every game he will go back to bein below average, just like he was in the first 40 odd games he played for liverpool

And YOU sir, is a moron, who knows sweet FA, about football!. If you got off your potato couch, and went to watch some the real thing (not highlights), you will see that, football is played with a ROUND O ball, and not ()!…Oops.

KK is deluded n proud. He is out of depth wit reality. Some of our players are more valuable dan others, unfortunately its d players rafa benitez bought not d ones KK bought. I would prefer at dis point to win ugly dan play well and say we were unlucky. You can’T be unlucky after spendin over 100m GBP.

Luis is great don’t get me wrong but he is so selfish. I have watched the match 4 times now in full. I do this to watch different people and there runs etc. Andy makes lots of runs and does not get the ball then he gets taken off when Downing comes on? And Maxi is one of the unluckiest guys alive he should get a chance after scoring against chel c. And I’d its not working after 60mins change it. Plus I would like to see jonjo in the hole for us he played great on loan to blackpool. But he didn’t get a bench warming? But what do I know LK rules.we.will be ok just wait and see!!! LNWO

And I think we need a quick right midfield player. My four things are
    1. Luis is really selfish and we can’t rely on him all the time
    2. we need to make better subs
    3. We lack real pace on the flanks
4 . I’m going to be controversial now but Jay is out for 3 weeks so how about Martin Kelly in that roll? I say this as I’m happy with the way our centre backs are playing and I don’t want to mess with something that works KK IS THE BEST LNWO
