Chelsea and Manchester United have received a boost as Wolfsburg midfielder Luiz Gustavo has admitted he would jump at the chance of joining an elite club again, according to reports.
Gustavo has just enjoyed an excellent season in Germany where his stand-out displays helped the club secure a second-placed finish behind Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga table.
The Brazilian international has become a key member of Dieter Hecking’s starting eleven since making the move to the Volkswagen Arena in 2013 following a failed stint at Bayern.
His impressive displays have attracted interest from the Premier League with the Telegraph claiming that Chelsea and Manchester United have been linked with moves for the defensive midfielder this summer.
It seems Gustavo would be open to making the move should either club come calling as the player has now admitted he’d love to join an elite club again, but he was quick to stress that he’s still happy where he is at Wolfsburg.
When asked if he would like to join the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United, Barcelona, Real Madrid or Bayern Munich, Gustavo is quoted by the Telegraph as saying:
“If I were to be able to once again have the chance to go to such a club, then that would be like a gift to me. However, I also know what I have at VfL. I am incredibly happy here.”
It’s hardly a ‘come-and-get-me-plea’ but it’s clear Gustavo is open to the idea of moving to on of Europe’s elite to test himself at the highest level again, and Chelsea and United are reportedly on his case.
With John Obi Mikel’s future at Stamford Bridge in doubt, Jose Mourinho may be on the look out for a defensive midfielder and Gustavo could forge a powerful partnership alongside Nemanja Matic if Cesc Fabregas is played a little further forward next season.

However, Louis van Gaal is also in the market for a holding player to act as a long-term replacement for 34-year-old Michael Carrick and Gustavo is seemingly also on the United boss’s radar.
The newspaper claims that Gustavo has a €45m (£33m) buy-out clause in his contract and Wolfsburg are under no pressure to sell their best players on the cheap, so Chelsea and United are going to have to dig deep if they want to land the Brazilian ace this summer.
