Transfer News: Chelsea Clear To Wrap-Up £17.6m Deal
Chelsea are clear to wrap-up a £17.6m deal for Baba Rahman after Augsburg completed the signing of left-back Philipp Max from Karlsruhe.
With the summer transfer window in full swing, managers are working hard trying to strengthen their squads ahead of the new season so we’ll bring you all the news and gossip. Today, Chelsea are closing in on another signing….
Chelsea are clear to wrap-up a £17.6m deal for Baba Rahman after Augsburg completed the signing of left-back Philipp Max from Karlsruhe, according to the Daily Star.
The Blues are in need of another full-back after selling Filipe Luis back to Atletico Madrid last week and Jose Mourinho admitted after the Community Shield on Sunday that he was looking to strengthen his options at the back.
The Portuguese coach told the press:
“We are trying to sign a left-back. We have only one [César Azpilicueta]. We are trying.” Mourinho is quoted as saying by the Guardian.
Rahman has emerged as a key target with the youngster being strongly linked with a move to Stamford Bridge in recent weeks and the Ghanaian international’s agent, Sascha Empacher, told the Guardian last week that that Chelsea were in talks with Augsburg and he was confident a deal would be agreed soon.
“Both clubs are still working on fine-tuning but we hope the agreement will be finalised soon,”
It appears the transfer has now taken a huge step closer to completion as the Daily Star claim that Augsburg have wrapped-up the signing of Rahman’s replacement, paving the way for the 21-year-old to secure his move to West London.
Nothing official has come out from either club as yet but it does appear like it’s only a matter of time until Rahman makes a switch to Stamford Bridge and I expect he’ll come in to be back-up to Cesar Azpilicueta.
The Spaniard has firmly established himself as Mourinho’s first choice left-back – which was the key reason Luis moved back to La Liga – but Rahman is only just starting out his career so should be more willing to learn the ropes from his more experienced colleagues before making a real push for a first team spot.

The youngster enjoyed an excellent season at Augsburg having joined the club last summer and Chelsea were first alerted to his potential by former boss Avram Grant – who now coaches the Ghana national team.
If he completes the move to West London, Rahman will become Chelsea’s fourth major signing of the summer following the arrivals of Nathan, Asmir Begovic and Radamel Falcao.
