Frustrated Arsenal Ace Confirms He Wanted To Join Man Utd In January
Arsenal defender Mathieu Debuchy has admitted he was disappointed that a proposed move to Manchester United fell through during the January transfer window
Arsenal defender Mathieu Debuchy has admitted he was disappointed that a proposed move to Manchester United fell through during the January transfer window, according to ESPN.
Debuchy fell behind Hector Bellerin in Arsene Wenger’s pecking order last season and managed just two Premier League appearances during the first half of the campaign.
His lack of action led to the 30-year-old asking to leave the North Londoners during the winter window in order to get more regular first team football ahead of this summers European Championships.
Debuchy has now confirmed that Manchester United made a late approach for his signature but despite his interest in moving to Old Trafford, Wenger rejected the proposal as the Gunners boss wasn’t prepared to strengthen a rival club.
The right-back has now expressed his disappointment that the move was blocked while he also took aim at the Arsenal manager for what he feels was a broken promise about playing time at the Emirates this season.
Debuchy is quoted as saying by ESPN:
“Yes, at the end of the transfer window they came in. They contacted my agents. I was disappointed, obviously. If I had the chance to go to Manchester United it would have been magnificent.
“Unfortunately it wasn’t the case. I discussed it with the coach too, who said that obviously he couldn’t help out a rival.”
“Yes, I’m a little bit annoyed by him [Wenger]. It’s his choice [not to give him playing time]. I came back well this summer, I had a good preseason.
“I was able to talk to him to know my future at Arsenal. He said that I would have game time and that we would discuss it in December. Unfortunately, I didn’t have this game time.”
Debuchy moved to Arsenal from Newcastle in 2014 but struggled with injuries during his first season and Bellerin took his chance to make the right-back spot his own.
It was understandable that the defender wanted to move on last month as he looks to cement his place in Didier Deschamps’ France squad for Euro 2016 and it appears he would have jumped at the chance of joining United.
Louis van Gaal has seen his full-back options decimated by injuries this season so the Red Devils could certainly have done with an experienced option at the back such as Debuchy during the second half of the season.

However, it came as no surprise that Wenger refused to do business with his rivals and Debuchy ended up sealing a loan move back to Ligue 1 with Bordeaux on deadline day. Based on his comments above, a permanent move away from the Emirates is almost a certainty this summer.
