Striker To Undergo Medical After Chelsea Hijack Spurs’ Move By Agreeing £33m Deal
Michy Batshuayi will undergo a medical with Chelsea after the Blues swiftly hijacked Tottenham’s move by agreeing a £33m deal with Marseille for the striker
The opening of the summer transfer window is almost upon us so we’ll bring you all the latest transfer rumours and gossip from around the globe. Today, Chelsea close in on Michy Batshuayi…..
Michy Batshuayi will undergo a medical with Chelsea today after the Blues swiftly hijacked Tottenham’s move by agreeing a £33m deal with Marseille for the highly-rated striker, according to the Guardian.
Batshuayi became one of the hottest properties on the market this summer after scoring 23 goals and providing 10 assists in all competitions for Marseille to help them secure a top four finish in Ligue 1 last season.
His impressive form attracted plenty of interest from the Premier League with Crystal Palace initially seen as the front-runners after having their £31m offer accepted earlier this week [source: Guardian].
The Daily Mail then reported on Tuesday that Tottenham were set to win the race for the striker after also having a £31m offer accepted with Batshuayi understood to be prefer a move to White Hart Lane over Selhurst Park.
However, there was a dramatic twist last night as the Guardian claim that Chelsea ruthlessly hijacked the Batshuayi deal after tabling a £33.2m (€40m) offer which was immediately accepted by Marseille.
The newspaper states that despite Chelsea being unable to offer any European football next season, the 22-year-old has opted to move to West London and will be given special dispensation to leave the Belgium camp to undergo a medical with the Blues today before signing a five-year contract at Stamford Bridge.
If these reports prove to be accurate, Batshuayi will become incoming boss Antonio Conte’s first signing of what is expected to be a busy summer as the Italian tactician looks to overhaul the squad that finished tenth in the Premier League last season.
A new striker to support Diego Costa was always going to be a priority for Conte and while Chelsea have been linked with a whole host of top names in recent weeks, it looks as though they’ve decided to move for Batshuayi to get their business done early.
The striker is currently over in France preparing for Belgium’s quarter final clash with Wales on Friday after coming off the bench to score during the 4-0 win over Hungary at the weekend, but it seems he’ll finish the tournament as Chelsea player.
