Santos may be forced to cash-in on Chelsea target Gabriel Barbosa amid reports that Manchester United are looking to push through a £30m deal for the striker, according to a report in the Mirror.
Barbosa – also known as Gabigol – has emerged as one of the hottest young talents in Brazilian football since breaking in to the Santos first team in 2013 with his potential seeing him hailed as the ‘new Neymar’ back in his homeland.
The 19-year-old’s potential has attracted interest from a number of top European clubs with the Sun claiming last week that Premier League duo Man Utd and Chelsea were battling it out with the likes of Inter Milan, Juventus, Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid for his signature this summer.
It looked as though United had moved themselves in to pole position as the newspaper suggested that the Red Devils were pushing through a £30m deal to sign the talented striker after chief executive Ed Woodward had supposedly met with Santos president Modesto Roma to thrash out a deal.
The Sun claimed that Barbosa has made it clear he’s keen on making the move to Old Trafford and now it looks as though United have received a further boost as the Mirror are carrying a report emanating from Brazil that suggests Santos may be forced to cash-in on their star man.
It’s understood that the Brazilian outfit are in extreme financial difficulties and are close to falling in to administration having failed to pay their players for the second consecutive month, so they’ve accepted they need to sell one of their prized assets.
Gabigol certainly falls in to that category and given the interest being shown in the teenager and the kind of fee they can command from the likes of United, it wouldn’t come as a surprise if Santos decide to sell over the coming days.
Jose Mourinho has hinted that his transfer business is over following the arrival of Paul Pogba unless something special becomes available and the chance to buy one of the world’s hottest young talents may prove too tempting to resist.

Obviously there is still time for the likes of Chelsea to try and hijack United’s proposed move for Barbosa and Antonio Conte is believed to be in the market for another striker, but right now it appears the Red Devils remain in pole position to secure a deal if Santos do decide to sell.
