Tottenham will look to cement their place in the top four when they take on Southampton at White Hart Lane on Sunday afternoon.

Any slim hopes of catching Chelsea must realistically be over after they extended their lead to 13 points with a 2-1 win at Stoke this afternoon so it’s all about battling to secure qualification to the Champions League next season.

Spurs currently sit second in the table – ahead of Man City on goal difference – and with third placed Liverpool heading to the Etihad Stadium tomorrow Tottenham have the perfect opportunity to take advantage of their nearest rivals dropping points.

However, Southampton are a dangerous side on their day so I’m sure Mauricio Pochettino won’t be taking anything for granted as they look to maintain their excellent form on home soil.

Team news

Spurs defender Kyle Walker is a doubt for the game after suffering an ankle injury at home last Monday and he’s been unable to train this past week so Kieran Trippier is on stand-by to deputise if he’s ruled out.

Harry Kane is facing at least 4-5 weeks on the sidelines after sustaining ankle ligament damage during the FA Cup over Millwall last weekend so Spurs have a huge void to fill up front.

Vincent Janssen will be hoping for a run of games but I think we’ll see Hueng-min Son leading the line up front tomorrow.

Danny Rose remains out with a knee injury but Mousa Dembele has recovered from a minor ankle problem while Victor Wanyama is also expected to feature despite picking up a neck injury last weekend.

As for Southampton they have no fresh injuries to worry about but they’ll continue to be without Charlie Austin, Jeremy Pied, Alex McCarthy, Matt Targett and Virgil van Dijk.

Tottenham 2-1 Southampton: Spurs have been superb at home this season so I can’t see past a Tottenham win tomorrow. Southampton will cause them a few problems with Gabbiadini in good form, but I’m backing Spurs to edge it 2-1.
