Manchester United are ready to go head-to-head with Chelsea over the signing of Alvaro Morata after Jose Mourinho made the £50m-rated Real Madrid striker his top summer target, according to the Telegraph.
Mourinho is in the market for a top class striker after losing Zlatan Ibahimovic and United have been linked with a number of players ahead of the summer transfer window.
However, the Telegraph claim Mourinho has now made Morata is prime target as the Spaniard is seen as a much cheaper alternative to the likes of Romelu Lukaku or Andrea Belotti – who are both valued at well over £80m.
The newspaper says that Morata is valued at nearer £50m, which makes him a far more attractive proposition as United look to add a much-needed goal threat to their attack ahead of next season.
The Manchester giants only registered 54 goals in the Premier League last season which was by far the lowest tally in the top seven and was even less than Bournemouth so it’s clear Mourinho needs to add more goals to his squad if United are to be genuine title contenders.
Morata should fit the bill as he managed to score an impressive 20 goals for Madrid last season despite only starting 16 times in all competitions for the Champions League winners.
The 24-year-old has struggled to hold down a regular place since re-joining Madrid from Juventus last summer and a move could be on the cards as he looks to secure first team football ahead of the 2018 World Cup finals.
However, United will face stiff competition as Chelsea have also been strongly linked with Morata with the Mirror reporting last month that Antonio Conte is pushing the club to formalise their interest in the striker.
Conte has just led the Blues to their fifth Premier League title but he needs to strengthen his squad ahead of their return to the Champions League and he knows Morata well from their time together in Turin.

It’s going to be an interesting battle between United and Chelsea and I think Morata would be a superb addition for either club as he has the potential to be a real star if he’s given a more prominent role at a new club.
