Arsenal will face fresh competition in the race to sign Riyad Mahrez after AS Roma expressed their interest in signing the £50m-rated Leicester City attacker this summer, according to The Sun.
Mahrez is expected to leave the King Power Stadium after handing in a written transfer request at the end of last season with the attacker saying he’s ready to take the next step in his career.
The Algerian international has been strongly linked with a move to the Emirates with Spanish outlet Sport reporting at the end of last month that Mahrez was ready to accept a 4-year deal at Arsenal after growing tired of waiting for Barcelona to make their interest official.
Arsene Wenger has been vocal about his admiration of Mahrez but The Sun claim the boss is reluctant to meet Leicester’s £50m valuation – which may explain why we’ve been strongly linked with Thomas Lemar in recent weeks.
Mahrez remains a target but it appears we’ll face fresh competition for his signature as The Sun are reporting that Roma have now identified him as a potential replacement for Mohamed Salah following his move to Liverpool.
The newspaper says Roma sporting director Monchi has already begun making enquiries over a potential deal to take Mahrez to the Stadio Olimpico this summer and the Italians are ready to test Leicester’s resolve with an opening £30m offer.
That’s unlikely to be enough to persuade the Foxes to do business but I’m sure they’d prefer to sell abroad rather than to the likes of Arsenal so Roma’s interest will be a concern to Wenger.
It looks as though Lemar is now the bosses main target in attack but Monaco are playing hardball so Mahrez is probably viewed as a realistic fall-back option if we can’t get a deal agreed for the French international.

I’m a big fan of both players so would welcome either Lemar or Mahrez at the Emirates this summer but we’ll have to wait and see whether we’re able to get a deal agreed for either attacker over the coming weeks.
