Managers are now pressing ahead with their plans for the final weeks of the summer transfer window so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip from around the globe. Today, Arsenal are linked with Karim Benzema…
Arsenal are ready to make a shock late move to try and sign Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema during the closing stages of the transfer window, according to a report in the Express.
Arsene Wenger has been a long-term admirer of the French international’s with the bosses interest dating back to 2009 when Benzema left boyhood club Lyon for Madrid.
The 29-year-old has enjoyed a sensational eight years at the Bernabeu as he’s scored 181 goals to help the club win three Champions League’s, two La Liga’s and a host of other domestic cups.
However, Benzema’s future at Madrid has been called in to question this summer due to the European champions pursuit of Kylian Mbappe with some suggesting he’ll be sacrificed if they land the Monaco youngster.
Benzema is still world class but he endured one of his worst goal-scoring season’s of his career last year as he managed just 11 La Liga goals and reports in Spain last month suggested Madrid could cash-in at around £62m this summer.
A move to North London could be on the cards as the Express are citing a report from Diario Gol that claims Arsenal are plotting a surprise last minute swoop to try and sign Benzema before the window shuts next week.
The Spanish outlet suggests that Wenger is particularly likely to move for the Frenchman if the club decide to cash-in on Alexis Sanchez to Manchester City.
It’s difficult to know how much truth there is behind this report as there is so much speculation around at the minute but I’d personally be shocked if Arsenal were to make any move for Benzema.
We’ve already spent around £50m on Alexandre Lacazette so why would we need Benzema too? We don’t play two strikers in our formation and neither is going to be willing to sit on the bench.
Plus we have Olivier Giroud and Danny Welbeck vying for spots so we don’t need a striker and if Sanchez was to leave then we’d have to buy a winger not a forward.

So I for one don’t see us splashing out on Benzema and the money would be better spent on a world class centre-back and midfielder as those are two areas we desperately need to strengthen before the end of the month.
