Manchester United have rejected an audacious opening offer from Arsenal for the signature of Anthony Martial ahead of the January transfer window, according to a report in the Express.
Martial enjoyed an excellent first season at Old Trafford having scored 17 goals under former boss Louis van Gaal following his move from Monaco in the summer of 2015.
The 21-year-old struggled to make an impression under Jose Mourinho last term as he fell out-of-favour but the Frenchman has rediscovered his best form during the early stages of the new campaign.
Martial has scored 5 goals and provided a further 6 assists in his 9 appearances in all competitions so far but that hasn’t stopped the newspapers from speculating over his long-term at United.
Arsenal were linked with a move for Martial during the summer and it seems they’ve stepped-up their interest as the Express are citing a report from Transfer Market Web that claims the Gunners have now submitted a formal bid.
The report doesn’t specify how much Arsenal have offered but it does state that Arsene Wenger is keen to get a deal wrapped-up ahead of the January window as the Arsenal boss looks for a replacement for Alexis Sanchez.
Any potential deal would surely smash the north Londoners transfer record set in the summer when they paid Lyon £52m for Alexandre Lacazette but the Express claim the Red Devils have already rejected Arsenal’s opening offer for Martial.
It remains to be seen whether they’ll return with an improved bid or if Wenger will be able to agree terms with United but I think Martial would be an excellent signing if Arsenal managed to lure him to the Emirates.
He’s by no means the finished article just yet but the French international has the potential to develop in to a world class attacker so it’s no surprise that Wenger is seemingly keen to take his compatriot to the capital.

However, I personally don’t think there is any chance Mourinho will agree to sell Martial to his old foe so Wenger will probably have to look elsewhere in his search for a new attacker this winter.
