Arsenal are confident of beating Chelsea and Tottenham to the signing of out-of-favour Manchester United defender Luke Shaw this summer, according to a report in The Gambling Times.
Shaw came through the Southampton youth system and emerged as one of the most exciting young full-backs in Europe which earned him a big-money move to Old Trafford in the summer 2014.
However, his time at United hasn’t gone according to plan as a number of injury problems have hampered his progress and he’s struggled to force his way back in to the first team since returning to full fitness.
The 22-year-old has started just six Premier League games this season and came under fire from Jose Mourinho after being substituted at half-time during United’s FA Cup win over Brighton last weekend.
Shaw is fully expected to move on at the end of the season and The Gambling Times claim United are ready to cash-in after Mourinho made it clear to the player and club bosses that the left-back has no future at Old Trafford.
Despite his lack of action in recent years, there is still no shortage of interest being shown in Shaw and the report says Arsenal have joined the likes of Chelsea and Tottenham in the race to sign the full-back.
Chelsea are being linked with left-backs amid speculation Marcos Alonso could head back to Spain while Spurs are in the market for a replacement for Danny Rose – who’s expected to leave the north Londoners this summer.
However, The Gambling Times says Arsenal are confident they will win the race to sign Shaw and new head of recruitment, Sven Mislintat, believes the Gunners are the ideal club to help him rejuvenate his career.
Arsene Wenger is under pressure to strengthen his squad this summer following a disappointing season and Shaw could be viewed as a long-term replacement for 32-year-old Nacho Monreal.
