Chelsea appear to have beaten Arsenal to the signing of Jean-Michael Seri after the midfielder agreed personal terms with the Blues head of a £35m move from Nice, according to reports via the Daily Star.
Seri has developed in to one of the best midfielders in French football since joining Nice from Pacos de Ferreira in 2015 and he was virtually ever-present last season as he provided 2 goals and 10 assists to help Nice finish 8th in the Ligue 1 table.
The 26-year-old’s performances have caught the attention of clubs here in the Premier League with Arsenal and Chelsea among those to be strongly linked with a move for the Ivory Coast international in recent months.
The Daily Star quoted French journalist Nabil Djellit as saying over the weekend that Seri had travelled to London to seal a move to England and claimed the midfielder was in talks with Arsenal and Chelsea.
Djellit is quoted as saying by the Daily Star:
“Info: Jean-Mika Seri is in London… Pending departure, for reminder, he is in contact with Arsenal, Chelsea… To follow!”
Arsenal are revamping their squad after Unai Emery replaced Arsene Wenger as manager and midfield is an area of concern following the departures of Jack Wilshere and Santi Cazorla this summer.
The Gunners are set to sign Lucas Torreira from Sampdoria and youngster Matteo Guendouzi from Lorient but Emery could be eyeing another senior midfield addition and Seri has seemingly been on his radar.
However, it looks like Arsenal are set to miss out as the Daily Star cite Yahoo Sports French journalist Manu Lonjon as claiming that Chelsea have stolen a march on their rivals after agreeing personal terms with Seri following talks with his camp.
The report says Seri is now waiting for the two clubs to agree the deal but Chelsea will have to hurry if they want to keep things simple by triggering the midfielders £35m release clause as it expires soon.
