Russian manager Dirk Nicolaas “Dick” Advocaat has criticised Arsenal chief Arsene Wenger on how he uses Russian winger Andrey Arshavin.
Arshavin has been use sporadically since Christmas and has failed to recapture the form from his debut season in the Premiership. However, Advocaat believes the 30-year old should be given more of a free role to exploit his attacking prowess opposed to a box-to-box player or 20 minute impact player.
The former Rangers manager said:
“One of Andrey’s problems is that he plays 20 minutes. Wenger uses him as a player who can refresh the game in the second half.
“Andrey shows willingness to give the team the best of what he has. I worked with him for over two years at Zenit St Petersburg and I know him.
“If you expect 90 minutes of running from him, then that is not understanding Arshavin.”
The winger has been linked with a move back to his native homeland with former club Zenit St Petersburg.
