Boruc deal to open up Arsenal move for Frey?
By Jonny Payne
Fiorentina’s deal to sign Celtic goalkeeper Artur Boruc could now pave the way for Sebastien Frey to move to Arsenal. The Polish shot-stopper, who was also once a reported Arsenal target, has agreed to sign for the Italian club according to SkySports.
An experienced international goalkeeper, Boruc would not settle for a place on the bench at a team without European qualification, meaning that the future of Frey is almost certainly away from the Stadio Artemio Franchi.
Frey had been linked with Arsenal earlier this season following some impressive displays in the Champions League, but rumours surrounding the 30 year-old Frenchman had ceased after he stated his preference to stay in Florence. It now seems as though Frey has either changed his mind or the club are willing to cash in on their somewhat eccentric ‘keeper.
Despite a good run in the Champions League, Fiorentina had a disappointing season domestically finishing in eleventh. Their promising young coach Cesare Prandelli has been appointed Italy national team manager and La Viola have appointed relatively inexperienced manager Sinisa Mihajlovic in his place. Frey may now feel the time has come for a new challenge.
Despite limited appearances for his country, Frey has built a strong reputation as a top-notch goalkeeper during his time in Italy, and if he were available, a number of Europe’s top clubs would be interested. Frey has the experience Arsenal need in between the sticks, the commanding presence our present goalkeepers lack, and he would fit well into an all French-speaking defence. Recent press reports have linked Arsenal with a move for Fulham’s Mark Schwarzer, but Frey could now be the preferred target.
