Chelsea are close to signing Inter Milan full back Maicon, according to the Daily Mail.
The report claims that the Blues are now considered as clear favourites for the Brazilians signature after Spanish giants Real Madrid pulled out of the running.
With only one year remaining on his current contract, Maicon will only cost the European champions around £6m. Madrid feel the deal is too expensive given the players high wage demands and the fact he’s approaching his 31st birthday and will therefore have no re-sale value.
Chelsea have been linked with a move for Lille’s Mathieu Debuchy already this summer as Roberto Di Matteo looks for a replacement for Jose Bosingwa, who left the club at the end of last season, but it seems he’s found his man in Maicon if the Mail is to be believed.
FT Verdict
Maicon could prove to be an excellent short-term signing for Chelsea if these reports are accurate and he moves to Stamford Bridge this summer.

He has proven to be one of the most effective attacking right back’s in Europe in recent years, but at nearly 31 he will need to be replaced after a couple of seasons so it might be worth Di Matteo bringing in a youngster now who can learn from Maicon and become the natural successor.
