Despite the transfer window being closed, there is always transfer gossip doing the rounds in the papers and we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest news during the coming months. Today, Willian talks up a move to Chelsea.
Long-term Tottenham and Chelsea target Willian has reiterated his desire to leave Shakhtar Donetsk and has named the Blues as one of three teams he’d like to join, according to the Daily Mail.
The 24-year-old played a key role in Shakhtar’s 2-1 win over the European Champions on Tuesday night but left the stadium holding a Chelsea shirt with his name on it and a question mark on the back, after a Blues fan handed him the shirt after the game.
Willian’s contract expires in 2014 and both Tottenham and Chelsea have made efforts to sign the Brazilian in previous transfer windows.
It’s been reported that Spurs may resurrect their interest this January and Willian has once again reiterated his desire to move to one of Europe’s top league’s in order to win a place in the Brazil squad for the 2014 World Cup.
However, the attacker failed to name Tottenham as one of his preferred destinations, claiming he likes Chelsea, AC Milan and Inter.
‘I would like to move from Shakhtar, my work here is complete. I would like to play in a big team in a big tournament, like the Premier League or Serie A. I like Chelsea, AC Milan and Inter.
‘I need to show up in a big league to be called up for the national team. My dream, my main goal is to play the World Cup in Brazil and that is only going to happen if I move.
‘If I were playing in a big league the same way I’ve played here, I would have more chances.
‘I knew Chelsea wanted me in the past, but the club didn’t want leave me, I think, about the price.
‘I respect the position of the club. I have to keep playing at a high level to receive new bids. We have to try to move on in the Champions League.
‘We are strong but Shakhtar is not just me, there are a lot of strong players. We played the perfect game against Chelsea. This season, we have more knowledge about our power.’
Willian is quoted as saying in the Daily Mail
Shakhtar paid Corinthians £12m for Willian in 2007 but now value the tricky winger at nearer £30m. However, that price-tag is likely to fall the closer the player gets to his contract expiration date.
