Chelsea Transfer News: Barcelona Eye Blues Defender
Spanish giants Barcelona have joined the likes of Manchester United, PSG and Real Madrid in showing an interest in 32-year-old Chelsea defender Ashely Cole.
With the January transfer window now open for business we’ll be keeping you up-to-date with all the latest transfer gossip. Today, another club are linked with Ashely Cole.
Spanish giants Barcelona have joined the likes of Manchester United and Real Madrid in showing an interest in Chelsea defender Ashely Cole, according to the Metro.
Cole is out of contract at the end of the season and the report claims he has been told by the Blues he won’t be offered a new deal to stay at Stamford Bridge, with the likes of Manchester United, Paris St Germain and Real Madrid all understood to be monitoring his situation.
However, the Metro believe that La Liga giants Barcelona have also joined the hunt with President Sandro Rosell asking to be kept informed of any developments involving the 32-year-old’s future. The newspaper claims Cole would favour a move to the Nou Camp if a deal can be agreed, but Barca are unlikely to match the reported £120,000-a-week wages the 32-year-old is said to be demanding.

Barca only signed Jordi Alba in the summer and the Spaniard was recently named in the FIFA world team of the year, so a move for Cole would be something of a head-scratcher to be honest. The Catalans may see the Englishman as back-up to Alba, but at 32 Cole is unlikely to want to see-out his remaining years warming the Nou Camp bench.
So I really don’t see any sense in him moving to Barcelona. Cole is still producing the goods and many in the game can’t understand Chelsea’s decision to not extend his contract, but that’s the situation he finds himself in so let’s wait and see where he ends up in the summer.
