Agent: Amorebieta Could Join Arsenal In June
The agent of Athletic Bilbao defender Fernando Amorebieta has confirmed they’re in talks with Arsenal and he could make a move to London at the end of the season
Despite the transfer window now being closed there will still be plenty of gossip doing the rounds in the newspapers, so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest transfer rumours. Today, Amorebieta could be moving to Arsenal.
The agent of Athletic Bilbao defender Fernando Amorebieta has confirmed they’re in talks with Arsenal and he could make the move to north London at the end of the season, according to the Mirror.
The report claims the Venezuelan international is set to leave Bilbao for nothing in the summer when his contract expires after the club withdrew their latest contract offer following unsuccessful talks.
Amorebieta’s agent, Gines Carvajal, has now revealed that the defender wants to play in England next season and confirmed they’re in talks with the Gunners about a possible move to the Emirates.
“We have had some contacts with Anzhi, they were ready to make a good offer, but my client wants to play in England, so the transfer to Russia was not possible.
“We are in talks with Arsenal, he could join them in June.” Carvajal is quoted as saying in the Mirror.
The 27-year-old centre-back has made over 250 appearances for Bilbao since signing from Baskonia in 2004 and caught the eye after playing a key role in the Spaniard’s defeat of Manchester United in the Europa League last season.

I’ve watched him a fair bit in La Liga this season and I think he’d certainly be an excellent addition to the squad. He’s what we like to call a ‘proper’ defender, full of aggression and doesn’t mess about. Amorebieta could be that ‘nasty’ defender we’ve been looking for. Problem is, his style has seen him sent off11 times during his career at Bilbao!
Standing at 6 foot 4 inches, he’s a beast of a defender whose most likened to Per Mertesacker but he’s far more mobile than the big German. The added bonus is he’s available for nothing so I think he would be a great signing. Let’s hope it happens.
