Arsenal Join Chelsea In Registering Their Interest In Unsettled Wayne Rooney
Arsenal and Chelsea are ready to offer Wayne Rooney the chance to stay in the Premier League after the striker told Man Utd he wants to leave the club this summer
With the summer transfer window set to re-open, there is plenty of gossip doing the rounds in the newspapers so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest transfer rumours. Today, could Wayne Rooney join Arsenal or Chelsea?
Arsenal and Chelsea are ready to offer Wayne Rooney the chance to stay in the Premier League after the striker told Manchester United he wants to leave the club this summer, according to Goal.com.
The report claims the appointment of David Moyes as Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor has only strengthened Rooney’s desire to leave due to his fractured relationship with his former Toffees boss, and Arsenal and Chelsea are believed to have already registered their interest with United after learning of the striker’s potential availability.
It was reported on Wednesday that Rooney held talks with Ferguson two weeks ago and informed him he wants to leave Old Trafford at the end of the season, but United remain adamant they won’t sell the England ace.
Goal.com claim PSG and Bayern Munich have already shown an interest, but London duo Arsenal and Chelsea are also believed to have contacted United and asked to be kept informed of any developments regarding the 27-year-old’s future.
Rooney still has two years remaining on his current contract at United, so they could force him to stay for another year before selling him in 12 months time and still command a sizable fee. However, it remains to be seen if Moyes would want to keep hold of an unhappy player who could potentially disrupt his first few months in charge.
Arsenal and Chelsea have both been linked with a number of strikers in recent months but Rooney would certainly be a major coup if either were able to pull it off and sign him from the champions this summer.
While many fans may claim Arsenal will be unable to afford Rooney’s reported £200,000-a-week wages, it’s worth noting that many media outlets have suggested the Gunners may finally loosen the purse strings this summer with their coffers boosted by recent commercial deals, while Goal.com also point out that Thierry Henry was on the equivalent of £200,000-a-week during his final year at the Emirates, so the north Londoners can stretch to that kind of figure for the right player.
But would United agree to sell to one of their league rivals? It’s extremely rare to see two of the league’s giants trade players, never mind one the caliber of Wayne Rooney, but we’ll have to see how this develops over the coming weeks. This could turn out to be the major transfer saga of the summer…
