Wenger Targets Impressive Polish Defender, But Would He Join Arsenal?
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is set to launch a move for Borussia Dortmund defender Lukasz Piszczek if the club fail to resolve Bacary Sagna’s contract dispute.
With the summer transfer window set to re-open, there is plenty of gossip doing the rounds in the newspapers so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest transfer rumours. Today, Arsenal target Lukasz Piszczek to replace Bacary Sagna.
Reports today claim that Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is set to launch a move for Borussia Dortmund defender Lukasz Piszczek if the club fail to resolve Bacary Sagna’s long-running contract dispute.
Sagna has just 12 months to run on his current deal at the Emirates and has so far been unable to agree terms over an extension, despite holding several rounds of talks with the club.
The Frenchman was a model of consistency during his first five seasons after joining the club from Auxerre in 2007 but his form has dipped worryingly this campaign as a series of injuries look to have taken their tole on the right back.
The Daily Mail claim that should the contract stand-off continue into the summer Wenger may look to cash-in and has identified Dortmund’s Piszczek as the ideal replacement.
The 27-year-old Polish international has enjoyed another impressive season in Germany, helping Jurgen Klopp’s side reach the final of the Champions League where they will take on domestic rivals Bayern Munich at Wembley later this month.
Piszczek joined Dortmund in 2010 on a free transfer from Hertha Berlin and was a mainstay in the starting eleven in the side that won back-to-back Bundesliga titles during his first two seasons. He’s also racked up over 30 caps for the Polish national team so has a plenty of experience under his belt.
If Sagna does end up leaving Arsenal this summer I think Piszczek would be superb signing. While Carl Jenkinson has shown huge promise this season, I think he’s still a couple of years away from being a first team regular and he could learn a lot from someone like Piszczek.
The big question mark would be whether Dortmund would be willing to sell another of their star men this summer and if so, would Piszczek want to leave the impressive German outfit for Arsenal? He’s won two league titles and reached a Champions League final in his three years with Dortmund; could Arsenal offer him that kind of success?
With Mario Gotze joining Bayern Munich and Robert Lewandowksi looking set to join him out the exit door, Dortmund may not be as competitive next season, so perhaps Piszczek may think it’s time for a new challenge. Hopefully that’s the case and he fancies trying his luck in the Premier League as he’d be a great addition to the Arsenal squad if we could get him.
