Tottenham are set to miss out on long-term target Joao Moutinho after the Portuguese playmaker passed his medical ahead of a move to ambitious French outfit Monaco, according to the Mirror.
Spurs have been tracking Moutinho for some time now and reports earlier this week suggested Andre Villas-Boas was keen on renewing his interest in the 26-year-old this summer after narrowly missing out on his signature in January when a deal fell through at the last minute.
However, it seems the north Londoners have missed the boat with the Mirror one of several media outlets reporting that Moutinho is set to join Monaco as part of a £60m deal that will also see Porto team mate James Rodriguez join the newly promoted Ligue 1 side.
The newspaper claims both midfielders have now passed their medicals and are expected to be unveilled as Monaco players in the coming days, with the Russian-backed club looking to spend big after gaining promotion back to the top flight last season under the stewardship of Claudio Ranieri.
The news will be a blow to Spurs as manager Andre Villas-Boas tries to build a squad capable of finishing in the top four next season, and a player of Moutinho’s caliber would have been an excellent addition at White Hart Lane. But unless something drastic occurs, it appears the Portuguese international will be plying his trade in Monaco next season. The French league might be poor, but at least the weather is good.
