Bale takes top award and Napoli to snap up Dos Santos from Spurs in January
Written by Viorel Mesca
Gareth Bale has been named player of the year by the FAW (Football Association of Wales). The enthusiastic left full-back/winger has been outstanding for Tottenham since his comeback into the first XI in January 2010.
Gareth’s addition to the team proved decisive as Tottenham finished fourth in the Premier League last season and achieved Champions League qualification.
Named Player of the Month in Premier League in April, Gareth maintained his superb form this season as he started in all of Spurs’ games (both Premier League and Champions League).
So far, he scored three goals, including a stunning volley at Stoke that won him the “Goal of the Month” award in August.
The enthusiastic left full-back/winger picked up the FAW’s top prize at an awards ceremony in Cardiff on Monday night, surpassing Craig Bellamy.
According to tottenhamhotspur.com, he said:
“This is a massive honour, you only have to look at the names who have already won this award to appreciate that.
I am surprised, pleased and honoured. And it has come during a very good spell for me. I just hope that I can be part of a successful Wales side in the future.
Now I have got into the Spurs team I have enjoyed every minute of my time in the first team. I have been given my chance and just love it all.
I have helped in Spurs’ progress, and now find myself playing in the Champions League and scoring in it last week.
There is plenty more progress the club can make, and I aim to be part of that. The same goes for Wales. This is a young, exciting squad and we can go on to great success in the years ahead.”
Spurs’ fans have also enjoyed his game and he seems to play better and better.
In other news, Napoli are reported to be keen in securing the services of Mexican starlet Giovani Dos Santos, as he struggles to make his way into Spurs’ first XI.
Despite some impressive performances for Mexico during the World Cup and for Spurs in pre-season, the forward was optimistic of securing his place into Redknapp’s plans. However, he has made only four appearances this season.
According to The Sun, Napoli are ready to make an offer for Dos Santos in January, as they believe that he can strengthen their attack alongside Lavezzi and Uruguayan sensation Edinson Cavani.
Dos Santos has been heavily linked during the summer with possible moves to giants like Fiorentina, Roma and defending European champions Inter.
Neither he nor his agent has made a statement so far.
