Arsenal Clear Favourites Ahead Of Chelsea To Land €45m German Attacker
Reports are claiming that Arsenal are now considered the favourites ahead of the likes of Chelsea to sign a German starlet who has a €45m buy-out clause.
Although the summer transfer window is officially closed that doesn’t stop clubs working hard behind the scenes to prepare for future signings, so we’ll keep you up-to-date with all the latest gossip. Today, Arsenal are understood to be favourites to sign Julian Draxler.
Reports in Germany are claiming that Arsenal are now considered the clear favourites to sign Schalke starlet Julian Draxler with boss Arsene Wenger said to be in regular contact with the attacker.
Draxler has emerged as one of the most sought-after youngsters in Europe since breaking in to the Schalke first team two years ago and has since become a regular in Joachim Low’s senior German international team set up.
His impressive form has caught the attention of several top clubs throughout Europe with reports in the summer claiming that Arsenal and Chelsea tried to lure him to the Premier League before he eventually opted to sign a new deal at the Veltins-Arena.
However, despite Draxler signing a new contract, speculation has continued to mount over his long-term future and the 20-year-old revealed last month that he could make a big-money move after next summers World Cup in Brazil.
“No way. I won’t switch then [in January]. It’s very important for me to play nearly every game. For my club I have the chance to play nearly every game, it’s important for me to improve myself.
“I’ve said every summer I have to look what is the best for me and I will do in the summer again and we will see what happens.” [source: Mirror]
Former Middlesbrough striker Jan Aage Fjortoft – who is now a journalist in Germany – watched from the stands as Draxler set up one and won a penalty during Schalke’s 3-0 win over Stuttgart on Saturday night and took to his official Twitter account to give us the latest on the players future.
Fjortoft has claimed that Arsenal are now considered as ‘big favourites’ to sign the attacking midfielder and states that Arsene Wenger is in regular contact with the youngster – who has a €45m (£37m) buy out clause in his contract.

Fjortoft appears to have a decent track record when it comes to German players signing for Arsenal as he was the first to break the news that Mesut Ozil was moving to the Emirates from Real Madrid in the summer, but it remains to be seen whether he’s going to get this one right as well.
However, the news does come just weeks after Draxler fuelled speculation he could move to the Gunners after admitting he has been speaking to Per Mertesacker and Mesut Ozil about life in north London.
“I have always said English teams are very big clubs and Arsenal is of course one of them.
“Of course I sometimes speak to Mesut or Per about the team, about the club, and they always have good words and they tell me nice things. You never know what happens in the summer but Arsenal is a very, very nice team.”
“They always have very young players, they play attractive football and that’s what I like.” [source: Mirror]
Arsenal proved with the signing of Ozil that they are now ready to play with the big-boys for the top talent, so we know they have the finances to pull off a deal worth in the region of £35million.
Whether Draxler is the type of player Arsene Wenger desperately needs right now is open to debate but he’d certainly be another exciting addition to their squad if they were able to beat off competition from the likes of Chelsea to sign him.
