With the January transfer window now open for business clubs will be working hard to try and strengthen their squad for the second half of the season, so we’ll keep you up-to-date with all the latest news, gossip and rumours. Today, Arsenal are set to bid for a former Tottenham striker while Manchester United are closing in on the signing of a young Croatian starlet.
Arsenal eye Berbatov
First up and to the Mirror are one of several newspapers who are reporting that Arsenal are seriously considering making a move for former Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov.
The Gunners are sitting pretty at the top of the Premier League following Wednesday’s 2-0 win over Cardiff but their lack of depth up front has been exposed with Nicklas Bendtner joining Olivier Giroud on the sidelines.
The Mirror claim Arsene Wenger will now dip into the transfer market to add another striker to his ranks to boost the clubs chances of winning the title this season and is set to make a £2m bid for Berbatov.
The Bulgarian is in the final year of his contract at Fulham and it’s suggested the west Londoners may be willing to cash in now while they can still command a fee while they would also be keen on getting the 32-year-old’s high wages off their books.
Berbatov is unlikely to be Wenger’s first choice target but with the bigger names unlikely to be available mid-season, the experienced forward could be the ideal short-term solution to help guide the club to their first title in almost 10 years.
Man Utd close in on Muric
Next up and the Daily Mail are reporting that Manchester United are in talks with Dinamo Zagreb over highly-rated striker Robert Muric.
The 17-year-old is considered as one of the hottest talents in his homeland after breaking into the Zagreb first team set-up and it seems he’s attracted interest from some of Europe’s top clubs.
The Mail suggest that the likes of Chelsea and Barcelona have scouted the youngster in recent months but it appears United are now set to snap up the skillful attacker, but there is confusion over whether Muric has signed professional terms with Zagreb yet.
If he has, then the newspaper states that the Croatians will demand a fee in the region of £6m. However, if it’s proved he’s still tied to a youth deal, then United will snap him up for just £300,000 in compensation.
