Manchester United could now face stiff competition for William Carvalho after Arsenal joined the chase for the €45m (£37.5m) rated midfielder, according to the Daily Star.
The newspaper claims that Gunners boss Arsene Wenger sent his team of scouts to watch the 21-year-old in action for Sporting Lisbon in recent weeks and has requested a detailed report on the defensive midfielder.
The news comes after newspapers strongly linked Manchester United with a move for the Portuguese under-21 starlet, with boss David Moyes believed to have been watching the Angolan-born ace extensively this season and is considering a move after being handed a sizeable transfer kitty to improve his flagging squad this month.
However, should Wenger or Moyes follow through with their interest they will have to dig deep if they want to lure Carvalho to the Premier League, as his buy-out clause stands at €45m (£37.5m) and Lisbon are under no pressure to do business for anything less than the release fee with his contract running until 2018.
Carvalho is a powerful holding midfielder who made his name on loan at Belgian club Cercle Brugge in 2012 before returning to cement his place in the Sporting Lisbon starting eleven.
His impressive form has not only drawn attention from the likes of Arsenal and Man Utd but also from the senior Portuguese national team, with he made his debut during their World Cup play-off win over Sweden last year.
