Wenger To Snub Van Persie And Pursue Other Targets Despite Dutchman Wanting Return
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is NOT interested in re-signing Robin van Persie this summer despite the Man Utd striker pushing for a return to north London
The January transfer window may have slammed shut but clubs will still be working hard behind the scenes at identifying targets for the summer, so we’ll bring you all the latest news, gossip and rumours. Today, Arsene Wenger isn’t interested in re-signing Robin van Persie.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is NOT interested in re-signing Robin van Persie this summer despite the unsettled Manchester United striker pushing for a return to north London, according to the Mirror.
The 30-year-old’s future has been the subject of much debate in recent weeks with widespread reports suggesting the striker is looking to leave United at the end of the season after growing increasingly frustrated with life at Old Trafford following a disappointing second season at the club.
A sensational return to Arsenal has been mooted by some corners of the media and reports in Italy recently claimed that Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has already met with van Persie’s agent to discuss a potential move back to the Emirates.
However, the Mirror are reporting today that although the Dutchman’s agent is trying to push for a switch to north London, Wenger is NOT interested in re-signing his former skipper this summer as he has other targets in mind.
The newspaper suggests that instead of pursuing the disgruntled United hitman, Wenger will renew his interest in long-term target Julian Draxler with the hope of turning him into a center forward, while he also has an interest in Loic Remy – who has an £8m buy-out clause.
Van Persie left Arsenal in 2012 under a dark cloud when he released a statement questioning the clubs ambition, which understandably didn’t go down too well among the Emirates faithful, so a return to the club was always going to prove difficult.
They say ‘never go back’, and I feel this rings true in the case of van Persie. Too much has gone on for him to return to Arsenal so it would be best for all parties for him to start afresh somewhere new, if he does indeed leave United this summer.
As for Arsenal, it’s clear they need to add more firepower to their squad and a player like Remy could be an astute purchase by Wenger. Draxler would obviously be an exciting addition, but the fee involved could make a deal difficult, so a player like Remy – who has a proven record for scoring in the Premier League – could be a sensible alternative.
