As we approach the opening of the summer window clubs will be intensifying their efforts in the transfer market so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, Arsenal and Liverpool are linked with Isaac Cuenca.
Arsenal and Liverpool have been placed on red alert after Barcelona attacker Isaac Cuenca has admitted he may have to leave the club in search of first team football, according to reports today.
The 23-year-old was once heralded as a future star at the Nou Camp having broken into the first team set up back in 2011. The attacking midfielder made 30 appearances that season – scoring 4 goals – and it looked as though he would go on to become a regular under then-manager Pep Guardiola.
However, his career has since stalled as a serious knee injury saw him miss the first half of the 2012/13 season. Upon his return he was sent out on loan to Ajax in January and made 5 appearances before another knee injury in early March sidelined the youngster for further four months.
These injuries have really set Cuenca’s career back and he’s failed to make a single appearance for Barca under Tata Martino this season, and the winger has now admitted that although he still has one year remaining on his contract, now might be the time to seek a move away in search of regular first team opportunities.
“I still have one year of contract left, but I do not know if I will stay. What I want is to play more.” Cuenca is quoted as saying by the Daily Star
Arsenal and Liverpool were both linked with Cuenca during the January transfer window and the Daily Star suggest they duo might renew their interest this summer after learning of the players growing frustration at the Nou Camp.
Arsene Wenger has already hinted he’ll be in the market for attacking reinforcements this summer after seeing the Gunners title bid derailed during the closing stages by a lack of depth in the forward positions, while Brendan Rodgers is also expected to be active as he looks to build a squad capable of dealing with the added rigor of Champions League football next season.
Cuenca was certainly an exciting prospect when he first burst onto the scene three years ago and his versatility is likely to appeal to the likes of Wenger and Rodgers as he’s able to play out wide or through the middle, so would provide plenty of options in attack. However, he’d be something of a risky purchase as he’s failed to rediscover his form following those two serious knee injuries.

It appears Cuenca is at a cross roads in his career but it remains to be seen where Arsenal or Liverpool will renew their interest in the youngster. I personally feel the duo should be aiming for more established names this summer and players who have a proven track record at the very top.
