Liverpool and Everton are reportedly planning to launch a late swoop to sign VfB Stuttgart star Jamie Leweling, as per Sky Germany.
The 25-year-old initially moved to MHP Arena on loan from FC Union Berlin in 2023 before the deal became permanent the following year. During his debut campaign, he featured as a rotational option before establishing himself as a key starter.
Last season, he showcased his productivity, scoring 11 goals and registering 12 assists in 50 appearances across all competitions. Moreover, he helped his side qualify for the Champions League by finishing fourth in the Bundesliga.
Having proven his worth for Stuttgart, Leweling secured his place in Germany’s World Cup squad but remained on the periphery, featuring only 30 minutes.
He has even endured a difficult start this season, losing the opening Bundesliga game against Bayern Munich 5-1.
Now, Sky Germany report that the forward’s recent promising performances haven’t gone unnoticed as AS Roma are keen on signing him before today’s deadline.
They have launched a formal €35m[£30m] proposal including bonuses to sign him, but Stuttgart haven’t accepted the bid yet. On the other hand, the Giallorossi are ready to hand him a contract until 2031.
Leweling hasn’t agreed to move to the Italian capital just yet, while Everton and Liverpool are waiting in the wings to hijack Roma’s deal late in this window.
Battle
Leweling is valued at around £34m by Transfermarkt and still has a contract until 2029. So, the German side aren’t in any rush to sell him this summer.
Leweling, standing at 6ft tall, is comfortable with both feet and can play on either flank. Moreover, he can provide cover in the RWB position if needed.
The Stuttgart forward is quick, efficient in creating opportunities for fellow attackers, can finish off his chances, and also works hard without possession.
He is a talented player and is currently at the prime stage of his career. Therefore, he might be a shrewd acquisition for Liverpool or Everton should either club purchase him.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the Toffees or the Anfield club eventually make a concrete approach to secure his services over the coming hours.
