Arsenal haven’t given up hope of signing Borussia Dortmund ace Ilkay Gundogan despite suggestions he’s already agreed to sign for Manchester United this summer, according to reports today.

Gundogan’s future has been the subject of intense speculation in recent months as he’s expected to leave Dortmund this summer after refusing to sign a new contract extension.

With just over a year left to run on his current deal, the former Bundesliga champions may be forced to cash-in at the end of the season to prevent losing the 24-year-old midfielder for nothing in 2016.

The uncertainty has led to rumours of a move to the Premier League with both Arsenal and Manchester United strongly linked with the German international in recent months.

Reports earlier this month claimed that the Gunners had opened talks with Dortmund over a potential deal to take Gundogan to the Emirates. It looked as though the North Londoners had missed out whenfurther speculation over the weekend suggested that Man Utd had agreed terms over a €30m (£21.5m) deal with the player expected to sign his contract over the coming days.

However, it seems Arsenal haven’t given up hope of still hijacking that potential move as the Metro are citing reports coming from Bild who claim today that the Gunners are still very-much in the race to sign Gundogan.

The German publication suggests that Arsene Wenger’s men are in a four-way battle with United as well as Spanish giants Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid to sign the midfielder.

If true, then it seems the chase to sign Gundogan is still on-going and the news will come as a blow to United fans as it appeared just 24 hours ago that they were on the verge of sealing a deal to take the player to Old Trafford.

United could certainly do with more options in midfield as their vulnerability without Michael Carrick was exposed yet again on Sunday with a 3-0 loss at Everton, while Arsenal are also in the market for midfield talent with the future’s of Mikel Arteta, Abou Diaby and Mathieu Flamini in doubt.

Gundogan would be a great signing for either club but it looks like they will not only have to battle each other, but also two of Spain’s heavy-weights if they are to sign the German star this summer.
