[RATINGS] Arsenal Player Ratings – Do You Agree?

By on September 18, 2011

It feels like this type of defeat could only happen to Arsenal. 2-1 and coasting at half-time, playing well, creating chances, should have put the game to bed….then we push the self destruct button and fold like a piece of paper.

If i was to rate the players at half-time, on the whole they would have been very positive but after giving myself a day of reflection time, here are my player ratings from yesterday’s disastrous 4-3 defeat to Blackburn Rovers:

Szczesny – 5.5

Was shaky on a couple of crosses, and could have done better with the Koscielny O.G but made a couple of great stops. Needs to be playing with better defenders in front of him.

Sagna – 6

Linked up well with Gervinho in the first half, before being forced off early in the second.

Koscielny – 3.5

Absolute nightmare. What can you say? One minute he looks like he has the potential to be a good CB, then he reminds you why he’s not good enough to play for AFC. Terrible footwork and positioning for the O.G and still doesn’t seem to understand the offside rule.

Mertesacker – 4.5

Hasn’t looked like the answer to our prayers like we had hoped. Isn’t commanding the defence like someone who’s played 75 times for Germany should be, and was turned by an over-wieght Yakubu too easily. Also should have scored in injury time.

Santos – 3.5

Shocking. Was at fault for 2 goals playing the opposition onside for both. Didn’t look fit and looked slow to get back in position. Put in a couple of decent crosses though. Looks like a typical Arsenal left back, decent going forward, but can’t defend or play offside.

Song – 4.5

Played very well in the first half, but had a nightmare in the second. Slow to react for the O.G and should have attacked the ball or at least anticipated it would come through to him.

Arteta – 7

The only real shinning light, anything of note went through him and neat finish for the second.

Ramsey – 6

Ok performance from Rambo, put in the usual good shift just never really got hold of the game. Needs to get involved more and make things happen in the final third.

Gervinho – 4

You may think this rating is harsh for a goal-scorer (it was a good finish to be fair), but he was one of the villains for me. Arsenal would have won the game had he passed to RVP for a tap-in to make it 3-1 instead of being selfish and going for goal himself.

Arshavin – 5

Very little to say. Typical performance from Arshavin.

van Persie – 6.5

Feel sorry for him, played well in the first half when Arsenal were playing well but others let him down in the second half. Could, and maybe should, have scored late on in injury time but great cross for Chamakh’s goal.

SUBS

Djourou – 4

Another poor performance from Johan. Awful challenge on Olsson that lead to the 4th goal and showed off his crossing ability as well. He’s a poor centre back, but a terrible right back.

Walcott – 7

Should have started, was a constant threat when he came on putting in several dangerous runs and crosses. More productive in his first 5 minutes than Arshavin was in his 65 minutes.

Chamakh – 6.5

Not his biggest fan but he made a difference and scored a great header. Should maybe have done better with another late chance though.

Those are my ratings. What are yours??

Song deserves higher, his work was immense if it wasnt for the own goal, perhaps 5.5. Walcott and chamakh should switch ratings. Koscielny should not be the scapegoat for every loss. It was santos that enabled the first goal with the offside. Gervinho should not lose 3 points because of one pass, good chance that the defender wouldve blocked van persie, and vp’s positioning didnt help either as he mightve been offside from gervinhos point of view.

I think Szczesny will only get better. He already looks a quality player and genuinely could be our number 1 for the next 15 years. Not a bad performance this weekend, although I agree that he could have possibly done better for the own goals.

Mertesacker will form a formidable partnership with Vermaelen, but will need time to adjust to the pace of the Premier League. He is NOT too slow though. That line is getting old quickly.

Santos is a typical Arsenal left-back. He is great going forward and his career goals per game record is amazing. He will need to tighten up defensively, but he’ll need time in training to learn to play in a more contained and disciplined manner.

Gervinho is another who will have to be coached to play the Arsenal way. Much like Hleb, Nasri and Rosicky, he likes to take people on a little too much but as with the other 3, he’ll learn to pass. Lets just hope we don’t take it too far because we need the threat of someone who isn’t afraid to take people on when we want to change a game.

Chamakh IS worth having in the squad. We bemoan the amount of mis-placed crosses and the amount of times we hit the first man, but what difference does it make unless we have someone in the box who can score with their head. Chamakh is THAT man. He has lacked in confidence since burning himself out half way through his first season and struggled to get back into the starting XI. He will come good and prove himself if given a chance.

Djourou is the only weak link here, long term, I believe. He isn’t good enough to be a first or second choice in any position. He makes too many errors. Positioning, anticipation and passing. He would seem like the dominant strong centre back that we need, but rarely does he live up to expectation and he must be cut from the squad – along with Squillaci (who surely would have left in the last transfer window had he not been injured).

We MUST sign one more centre back and I think that should be Gary Cahill. He’s proved that he CAN win the high balls, he can play with the ball at his feet, he is quick enough if we insist on continuing to play a, sometimes dangerously, high line, and he won’t be knocked off the ball easily.

A very unlucky defeat. Especially considering the offside goal and two own goals, but still too sloppy in our own third.

The zonal marking MIGHT work, but it needs a lot more practice on the training ground before unleashing it on the first team games. We’ve played man-to-man marking for far to long to just change it almost overnight.

We have proved that we will continue to create bucket loads of chances going forward against any opposition and if we can sort out the trouble at the other end, I have no doubt that we will finish in the top 4 this season.

Don’t panic Gooners. Please. Just have a little faith!

I literally couldn’t have put it better, I agree with every single point you’ve made! If we can get and keep Van the Man, Tommy V, Song, Gibbs, Wilshere and Walcott fit (big ask), along with some quality, like Cahill, M’Vila, Hazard and Gotze(?) in January, there’s no reason we can’t challenge for the Champions League this season. It’s just a shame I can’t see us going for the title, but there’s still 30 games to play yet, things change!

i agree with you on every player except chamark.chamark is awful, that ball must have accidentally hit his head.he plays like he has no idea about facing the goal or going forward yet wenger still believes in him.as for gervinho-cut his hair and keep him on the bench

djourou beta than koscielny, rambo playing bad… You must be deluded, did you even watch the match at all or the TV set is turned upside down. If djourou can play better he would have started with PMertesacker. All we need is to go back to the normal way of playing football with 2 strikers, RVP and chamakh or Pack, and 2 wingers on d left and right since it no longer a new thing in arsenal that we can’t defend then we attack all game and score more than our opponent.

Midfield is OK so long as Rambo continues to do more than his share the work. Santos is no defender. DJ is in another dimension and who knows whether Mr Kosser or Dr Jeckyll will turn up. My biggest concern, apart from the defence, is that Gerv, Arsh and RVP do not play FOR each other or even WITH each other. Two of them are selfish bastards. As a result- there is far too little movement up front and that makes defending easy.

in my view Kos much better performer than Per.

Sagna : should handle wingger (olson and another one) much better

enough with these ratings, its actually boring because arsenal have a squad capable of winning the title.
arsene needs to change tactics and selections before we win games again.
van persie a lone striker, arshavin a winger without stamina and gervinho still learning the arsenal way.
how can you expect to win with a non existent attack? blame the defence because you dont know anything about, how do the opposition stage counterattacks. you have lazy strikers that dont help the defence.
wenger needs to stop playing people out of position, stop playing arshavin at all. where is miyaichi? i guess he’s the new vela coz he will never play. where is chamberlain? chu young park?

a squad capable of winning the title, don’t be daft, no one loses 8-2 can be considered title contenders this Wenger’s policy, his players and his ego which is killing our club, the man is a despot and needs to be removed

Gervinho a 4? He was the only person for Arsenal who tried. And after VP had a go with him, he passed to him when he was similar situation and vp stuffed up. Gervinho was hungry for a ball and he was hungry for a goal, we should praise him not ridicule him. And Arshavin who did nothing gets a 6, seriously dude you should not have your own blog, you make me sick!

Koscielny tried aswell, he failed but he was the only person in the backline who was willing to put everything on the line. And he has been playing every game in the last month

We must had been watching different games. Giving similar points for Gervinho and Gourou? Gervinho was the star of the game without a question except for a couple of finishing pass errors he played much better than even our captain RVP who had who was relactant to take a shot at the goal. Ramsey had another lousy day failed to connect any productive contact and failed to support Song in his defensive duties in the middle of the pitch. AW should have played Benayou in that position. Arteta was excellent, Song was exceptionally solid in mid-field the OG was a freaky goal showing the goalies inability to lead defenders to clear his way and collect the ball when it is in the 6 yard box. Mertsenger is doing well considering his arrival date to the club and it will not be fair to comment on Santos on his 1st outing, Kchelny was a star on Tuesday but I could not say the same for Saturday but regardless he had been more useful for the club than Vermalen who had been injury prone and unreliable. I sens a little bit of fire on Chamach on his last 2 games it is about time he shows up for the team.

It’s stupid trying to give rating to individual players. Our problem lies in the system we are using. There is neither clear leadership nor structure in our defense. Even if we had the best defenders in the world and they were left to make it up as they go along the defense would still be a shambles.
We need to develop a system of defending with each player knowing what role is expected of him and then practise, practise and practise. And then when training is finished, practise defending some more.

We had the chance to buy Cahill & or Jagielka and or Samba but instead Mr W thinks it’s more prudent to play Koscielny & Djourou. Why? Djourou would have trouble getting into a Sunday pub team, Koscielny just isn’t good enough. We had great backs before, Adams, Bould, Keown, O’leary, Viera, Petite, Dixon, Winterburn, these were leaders who played with passion, we don’t have that now. We all knew Fabregas was going, a replacement should have been put in place. We had the opportunity to get Juan Mata but they wouldn’t pay the money. Arsenal got in approx. £70 million in transfers plus the Champions League money and spent less that £50 million. Unless things change very quickly, we’re going to get embarrassed a lot more this season.

Totally agree about Gervinho. How many more times are we going to cruise into the lead,be in total control and then fail to be clinical enough to get out of sight. We should have been a minimun of four goals clear at half time and then any defensive short comings are largely irrelevant. The writing is nearly always on the wall for me when we fail to be brutal enough and sort of shrug our sholders when our exciting football does not lead to us burying teams like Blackburn.
