Arsenal Injury Update: Bad News On Szczesny & Gibbs Ahead Of United Trip

Arsenal travel north to face Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday lunchtime and manager Arsene Wenger has given an injury update ahead of the game.

At his weekly press conference on Thursday morning, the Frenchman gave the latest on Gervinho, Wojciech Szczesny, Kieran Gibbs and Abou Diaby, and unfortunately it’s not good news Gooners.

Gervinho has been ruled out for three weeks after injuring his ankle shortly after coming on against QPR on Saturday, so will definitely miss the United game.

However, while we have no fresh injuries after Tuesday’s 7-5 win over Reading, Wenger has confirmed that Szczesny, Diaby and most importantly Gibbs will also be missing after failing to recover in time to make the trip to Old Trafford.

Wenger is quoted as saying by the Independent:

“Compared to last week Gervinho is of course out, for we think three weeks,” he said.

“We have no comebacks, no Wojciech [Szczesny], no [Kieran] Gibbs, no [Abou] Diaby of course as well.

“Basically the squad should be approximately the squad we had last week. We have no injuries as well from Tuesday night.”

This means we’ll have to stick with Vito Mannone in goal and the hapless Andre Santos at left back. Santos in particular is a worry as he’s looked out-of-sorts in recent games and well below the standards required to play United away from home.

Santos was torn apart by Farfan against Schalke and was also given a tough time by the QPR attack, so god help him against Valencia and Rafael on Saturday. The United duo were devastating at Stamford Bridge last Sunday and gave Ashley Cole a torrid time. If Cole can’t contain them what hope is there for Santos?

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Fergie target that side of the pitch again this weekend, let’s just hope Andre puts in the performance of a lifetime!

I prefer the own goals of Kos to the 90 minutes heartache that Santos gives one. Kos should partner Per while Vermalin moves to the left. Even if people feel that the Kos/Vermalin partnership is not working this season, it did work last season and the agility of Kos will be Required against The Rooneys and Rvp’s of this world. I pray that Wenger listens to Bould this time around. Santos is responsible for the poor showing of Podolski lately because he doesn’t trust him. With Wilshere available now, it is expected that Cazorla’s game will pick up again.

Everyone’s slagging off Santos . Yes he was very poor against Schalke but contrary to most opinion he had a good game against QPR despite being attacked throughout.
He made 8 out 8 tackles and very little got past him.
The trouble is he looks terrible and makes his tackles with a sudden last minute jab.
      But I’d rather have Gibbs!

Guys slating Santos are CRAZY. Reading your comments and how the writer is advising Fergie to attack Santos’ s side sounds like people want Santos to have a very bad day. May Santos prove you wrong. Why do you slate your own defender. I thought you would have given advise to Arsene on how he should contain the United forwards. I am short of words for you guys

But he isn’t a good defender. Doesn’t matter if he’s out player on not. We all hope he does well but his current form/ability doesn’t inspire confidence.

Pls Mr Wenga don’t wait for a miracle on santos he his lost. Rather than taking a gamble pls use most sorted out players than using Santos who plays like a 14 yrs old just learning his trade.

I think Vermaelen should be moved to left back and Koscielny brought into centre back. Or maybe Sagna left back with Jenkinson regaining his right back birth. Even the unproven Meade or 3 at the back would be better than playing Santos

      Talking of Meade,
I think that boy is a real prospect. Quite comfortable on the ball and pacy. I would bring him on, and have the Ferrari champion sit out on the bench

we have enough defenders at our disposal
i trust any one assigned to play as our left back will do a wonderful job.If we will pack the middlefield with players who can defend and assist the our left and right backs we will come alright.Theo must operate on the left side of the middle field to neutralise the treat that Valencia can bring to Santos.Their defence is also not good at all, especially with quick strikes like ours.without the assist of referes
    we can beat them.

On top of his game Santos can really be stylish, but at this moment,he surely need an assist from somewhere against the like of Valencia or else we will see a fake red card again! May the gods of football condemn Man U to hell this weekend-Amen.

Wenger, a lost sheep does not hear the owner’s whistle, let Sagna, Coqueli or Verminator man the left full back, this changes will unsettle the likes of Valencia, Rooney and before you know the damage had been done. Jekinson and Koseiny to man right back and defence back respectively.

Santos will do ok if he gets help! Podolski needs to track back otherwise Santos has two players to worry about!

Santos is not a bad player. All Arsenal left backs go forward and forget they are defenders. Gibbs is guilty too. Maybe that is the way they are asked to play. Your comments and fears therefore, should be directed to the coaches and not the player. The main worry should be Ramsey who acts like a spoiler in the midfield. Instead of him, fans please beg Wenger to play Arshavin in that position if at all we want to avoid disgrace at Old Trafford.

Arsenal have no chance in this game with Santos at left back and Ramsay on the wing. Any coach other than Wenger could see that. But, as you all know he’ll persist with it until the 65th minute and trailing 3-0 when he’ll throw Walcott and the Ox on to try and save the game. Classic.

Pls,pls and pls prof.wenger.play with ur best and let vermalin take the place of santos while koschelny plays along side mertsacker.Again it is better to start with Walcot who looks serious and aggressive than Ramesy who is very unserious. With this combination,I believe we will dislodge Man u….thanks Wenger

The decision to play Santos will not be made on form or ability but on the fact that on paper he is experienced in that position. Winger will not gamble on a re-shuffled back line with TV5 at left back. Expect the defence from the QPR game and much the same team. I suspect the bench will contain the surprises. I wish it was different but this is where we are and this is who we have. It is down to our players to rise to the challenge…together.
