Arsenal and Manchester have yet to make their move for William Carvalho with Sporting Lisbon insisting they haven’t received any offers for the midfielder, according to reports.

Carvalho has become one of the most highly rated young midfielders in Europe after an excellent season with Sporting and his impressive performances earned him a place in the Portugal squad for the World Cup finals in Brazil this summer.

The 22-year-old’s form has also led to interest from the Premier League with Arsenal and Manchester United among the clubs who have been strongly linked with a move for the powerful midfielder in recent months.

The Gunners have emerged as front-runners for the players signature with reports last weekend claiming the North Londoners were back in negotiations with Sporting and after seeing a formal €30m (£24m) bid rejected earlier in the summer.

However, it appears those reports could be wide of the mark as the Portuguese clubs chairman Bruno de Carvalho has insisted they are yet to receive any offers for Carvalho this summer.

“There were proposals for Rojo and Slimani, but the values are below what Sporting legitimately want for the players,”

“For William, there are no proposals.” Carvalho is quoted as saying by the Express

Arsene Wenger is understood to be on the look-out for a defensive midfielder and it was thought he had turned his attention to Carvalho after failing to agree terms with Real Madrid’s Sami Khedira.

While Sporting claim no offers have been tabled as yet, widespread reports suggest the Gunners interest is concrete so we can’t rule out the North Londoners stepping up their interest during the final three weeks of the transfer window.

It remains to be seen whether United boss Louis van Gaal will formalise his interest as he looks to bring in a dominant midfielder to play alongside Ander Herrera this season, but the former champions have plenty of funds available so they could pose a real threat to Arsenal’s hopes of landing the youngster.
