Chelsea Ready To Hijack Man Utd’s Move For €50m Star
Chelsea have joined the chase for Mats Hummels and are ready to hijack Manchester United’s attempts to sign the €50m-rated Borussia Dortmund star this summer
As the opening of the summer transfer window approaches, managers are working hard identifying targets and lining-up potential deals so we’ll bring you all the news and gossip. Today, Chelsea are ready to move for Mats Hummels….
Chelsea have joined the chase for Mats Hummels and are ready to hijack Manchester United’s attempts to sign the €50m-rated Borussia Dortmund defender this summer, according to reports.
Hummels has been at Dortmund since joining them from bitter rivals Bayern Munich in 2009 and after failing to make the break-through at the Allianz Arena, he’s gone on to establish himself as one of the best centre-backs in world football.
However, the 26-year-old has been strongly linked with a move away from the Westfalonstadion this summer following Dortmund’s hugely disappointing season that saw them sit bottom of the Bundesliga table in December.
The former champions have recovered in recent weeks but they still sit 10th in the table and are destined to miss out on Champions League football next season.
This has led to intense speculation over a potential move to Manchester United with Louis van Gaal believed to have made the defender a key target this summer, while some reports even suggest they’ve already agreed terms in principle to take him to Old Trafford.
It remains to be seen how much truth there is in those rumours but it looks as though United will now face some stiff competition as the Telegraph are reporting that Chelsea have joined the chase for Hummels signature and are ready to hijack United’s move.
The newspaper suggests that the Blues will have no problem meeting Dortmund’s €50m (£37m) asking price and they feel that should they go on to lift the Premier League title, they will be a more attractive move for the player.
The lure of playing for the champions is sure to be a tempting one for the German international but it would be interesting to see how Jose Mourinho would fit him into his starting line-up.
You don’t often spend €50m on a player to play him on the bench so with John Terry signing a new one-year deal recently, it may be Gary Cahill who would miss out should Hummels make the move to Stamford Bridge.

At United, he could be the main-man who van Gaal builds his defence around, so I’m sure the 20-time champions will try to use that to their advantage in negotiations in a bid to tempt him to Old Trafford.
It’s going to be intriguing to see where Hummels ends up but I hope he heads to England as it would be great to see him plying his trade in the Premier League next year.
