Chelsea are lining-up a €28m bid for Augsburg defender Baba Rahman as doubts over the future of Filipe Luis continue to grow, according to reports.
Luis only moved to Stamford Bridge in a big-money deal from Atletico Madrid last summer but things haven’t quite gone according to plan for the Brazilian international here in England.
He’s failed to establish himself as a first team regular under Jose Mourinho with Cesar Azpilicueta making the left-back spot his own this season as Chelsea marched towards a League and Cup double.
There has been constant speculation linking Luis with a move back to Spain this summer and it appears Mourinho is already lining-up a potential replacement for the 29-year-old South American.
The Daily Star claim that Chelsea have been keeping a close eye on Augsburg’s highly-rated full-back Baba Rahman and are now lining-up a €28m (£20m) bid for the Ghana international this summer.
Rahman has been in excellent form in Germany this past season with his impressive displays helping Augsburg finish fifth in the Bundesliga table to qualify for the Europa League next year.
It now appears as though he’s attracted interest from the Premier League champions and the newspaper suggests that Mourinho has already spoken with Ghana boss – and former Chelsea manager – Avram Grant about the 20-year-old.
It remains to be seen how Augsburg would react if Chelsea did come in with a firm €28m offer but you’d expect they would find it extremely difficult to turn down given this was Rahman’s first full season as a first team regular.
That kind of money would also give boss Markus Weinzierl ample funds to strengthen his squad with ahead of their assault on the Europa League next season, so I think a deal could be done if Chelsea want the youngster enough.

Rahman is only 20 so he would be happy to provide back-up to Azpilicueta for the foreseeable future but he has the ability to push the Spaniard for the first team shirt over the coming years if he was to make the move to West London.
