Liverpool are trying to hijack Chelsea’s attempts to sign Colombian international striker Radamel Falcao from AS Monaco, according to reports.
Falcao has just come off the back of a nightmare season on loan at Manchester United that saw him score just 4 goals in 29 appearances as he struggled to hold down a regular place in Louis van Gaal’s starting eleven.
It was no surprise when United turned down the chance to make the move permanent but speculation soon emerged claiming that Falcao’s agent Jorge Mendes was in talks with Chelsea about a shock move to Stamford Bridge.
Jose Mourinho then hinted he was ready to sign the Colombian hitman after being quoted by the media as saying he was willing to give the striker a chance to get back to his best form.
“It really hurts me that people in England believe that Falcao is the guy they saw at Manchester United,”
“He’s a player I know, one that I’ve followed since Atletico Madrid and if I can help Falcao arrive at his level I will do it.” Mourinho told reporters earlier this week
The Mirror were one of several newspaper who claimed that Falcao was willing to take a huge pay cut on his £265,000-a-week wages to secure the move but Monaco were complicating the deal by insisting on a permanent transfer at £35m.
However, it appears Chelsea are now going to have to fight off stiff competition for the 29-year-old’s signature as the Daily Star are citing reports coming out of France which claim Liverpool are now trying to hijack the deal.
Brendan Rodgers is looking to add more firepower to his squad after the Merseysiders only registered 52 league goals last season and it seems he wants to take a gamble on Falcao being the man to fire them back into the top four next season.
It’s going to be interesting to see who Falcao chooses if both Chelsea and Liverpool can agree deals with Monaco. It will be difficult to see the player turn his back on the joining the Premier League champions and playing in the Champions League but with Diego Costa Mourinho’s No.1 striker, Falcao may find himself on the bench more often than he’d like at Stamford Bridge.

Liverpool can only offer Europa League football next season but Rodgers will be able to provide more regular game-time which could sway Falcao’s decision.
It will be a big risk for whoever does end up taking Falcao this summer but if they can get him back to his best, he could turn out to be a very shrewd signing.
