Liverpool Confident Of Hijacking Tottenham’s Move With £20m Midfielder Swoop
Liverpool are confident of hijacking Tottenham’s move for Georginio Wijnaldum and will enter advanced negotiations over a £20m deal with Newcastle this week
The opening of the summer transfer window is now open for business so we’ll bring you all the latest transfer rumours and gossip from around the globe. Today, Liverpool step-up their interest in Georginio Wijnaldum….
Liverpool are trying to hijack Tottenham’s move for Georginio Wijnaldum and will enter advanced negotiations over a £20m deal with Newcastle United this week, according to the Telegraph.
Wijnaldum made a £14.5m move to Newcastle from PSV Eindhoven last summer and enjoyed an excellent debut season in the Premier League after scoring 11 goals as well as providing 5 assists in his 38 appearances.
Despite his form, the Dutch international was unable to prevent the Magpies from relegation to the Championship and Wijnaldum is one of several top players who are expected to leave St James’ Park this summer.
The 25-year-old has attracted plenty of interest from the Premier League and the Daily Mail reported last week that Tottenham were hoping to secure a deal to sign the midfielder after Mauricio Pochettino made Wijnaldum a prime transfer target.
The Argentinean coach has already snapped up Vincent Janssen and Victor Wanyama but the Spurs boss is looking to further strengthen his options ahead of their assault on the Champions League and Wijnaldum is firmly on his radar.
However, it looks as though the north Londoners are going to face stiff competition as the Telegraph are one of several media outlets who are reporting today that Liverpool have now turned their attention on Wijnaldum after failing to secure a deal with Udinese for Piotr Zielinski.
Klopp has already brought in four new players this summer and reports claim he’s on the verge of sealing a deal for Estonian centre-back Ragner Klaven but the Reds boss wants more options in midfield and it appears Liverpool are now in pole position to sign Wijnaldum.
The newspaper says that while Newcastle are demanding £27m for the 25-year-old, Liverpool are confident of securing a deal closer to £20m with negotiations due to enter the advanced stages this week.

We’ll have to wait and see how smoothly those talks go but with Spurs also in the hunt for Wijnaldum’s signature, I expect Newcastle will play hardball over a fee for the much-coveted midfielder.
However, I fully expect Wijnaldum to leave St James’ Park over the coming weeks and I think he’d be an excellent addition for either Liverpool or Tottenham if they could get a deal agreed with the Magpies.
