Daniel Sturridge and Dele Alli were on target as England made it two wins from two qualifying games with a 2-0 victory over Malta at Wembley on Saturday evening.
Sturridge hasn’t been a regular at Liverpool so far this season after losing his first team place under Jurgen Klopp but Gareth Southgate put his faith in the striker and was repaid as he headed England ahead in the 29th minute following a cross from Jordan Henderson.
The hosts doubled their lead shortly before the break as a nice interchange of passing involving Sturridge and Henderson led to the latter picking out Alli and the Tottenham midfielder scored at the second attempt to make it 2-0.
England continued to dominate after half-time but lost some of their edge and clear cut chances were harder to come by. Alli had the best opportunity to make it 3-0 but the Spurs man blazed over from close range.
So the Three Lions had to settle for 2-0 in what was largely a disappointing performance given the opposition but the good news is England have made it six points from their two qualification games.
