Spurs started brightly and opened the scoring when Christian Eriksen lashed home a superb strike from the edge of the box following a slick move from the visitors to make it 0-1 in the 11th minute.
The Blues levelled things up on the stroke of half time when Pedro curled home a stunning strike in to the top corner from 20 yards to send the two sides in level at the break.
Chelsea then took the lead shortly after the restart as Victor Moses ghosted in at the far post to fire home a Diego Costa cut back to make it 2-1 in the 51st minute.
Both sides had chances to add to the score-line but the hosts held on to secure a vital three points which sees them leapfrog Manchester City and Liverpool to go one point clear at the top of the league after 13 games while Spurs remain fifth after being consigned to their first defeat of the season.
