Liverpool Team News: Klopp Confirms Injury Boost + Coutinho/Matip Updates
Jurgen Klopp has confirmed an injury boost ahead of Liverpool’s FA Cup tie with Plymouth while he’s also offered updates on Coutinho, Matip and Milner.
Liverpool will be looking to book their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup when they take on Plymouth at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.
Ahead of the game, Jurgen Klopp has been speaking at his pre-match press conference this morning and he’s given reporters a team news and injury update.
The Reds boss revealed that Daniel Sturridge has been unable to train so far this week after picking up an ankle injury during the 2-2 draw at Sunderland on Monday.
However, thankfully for the Merseysiders, the injury isn’t serious and the striker is expected to return to training today which could put him in contention to face Plymouth this weekend.
Klopp also revealed that Philippe Coutinho is progressing well as he looks to rebuild his fitness after recovering from an ankle ligament injury that’s kept him out since the end of November.
Coutinho returned to training late last month but the Liverpool boss has confirmed that the Brazilian international won’t be rushed back to face Plymouth so he’ll be hoping to make his return against Southampton next weekend.
The same can be said for Joel Matip as Klopp has also confirmed that while the defender is making good progress in his recovery from an ankle injury the centre-back won’t feature on Sunday afternoon.
James Milner is another player who won’t be risked this weekend as Klopp says that the versatile 31-year-old will be given more time to fully recover from a minor calf issue that he suffered last time out.
The German coach is set to rotate his squad and give his key men a breather following the hectic festive period with Loris Karius and Joe Gomez among those who are ready to be given a chance to impress against Plymouth.
Here is what Klopp told reporters this morning:
