Manchester United have tabled a £30m offer to sign Benfica defender Nelson Semedo as Jose Mourinho looks to secure his second major signing of the summer, according to a report in the Mirror.
Mourinho is gearing up for a bust summer in the transfer market as he tries to build a squad capable of competing for major honours next season and United have already snapped-up centre-back Vcitor Lindelof from Benfica.
But it seems Mourinho is plotting another raid on the Portuguese champions as the Mirror claim United have now set their sights on sealing a deal to sign full-back Nelson Semedo.
The 23-year-old has been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford in recent months with the Daily Star reporting back in February that United were hot on his trail.
It looks like United have now formalised their interest as the Mirror says the Manchester giants have tested Benfica’s resolve with an opening £30m offer for the talented right-back.
It remains to be seen how Benfica respond but United aren’t the only club showing a keen interest as the newspaper states that Barcelona have also identified Semedo as a potential signing – although the Catalans priority remains Arsenal’s Hector Bellerin.
Mourinho needs to find a long-term replacement for Antonio Valencia as although the Ecuadorian was in superb form last season he’ll turn 32 in August so another option is needed at right-back.
Semedo has developed in to one of the best full-backs in Portuguese football since breaking in to the Benfica first team two years ago and he’s firmly established himself as a regular while he’s also broken in to the Portuguese national team set-up.

We’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming weeks but I think Semedo would be a superb addition if United could get a deal agreed with Benfica for his signature this summer.
