Manchester United are plotting an ambitious swoop on Barcelona for Jordi Alba as Jose Mourinho tries to solve his problems at left-back this summer, according to a report in the Express.
Mourinho is expected to be extremely active in the transfer market as he looks to build a squad capable of competing in the Premier League and Champions League next season.
Left-back is likely to be a priority area for strengthening as it was a problem position for Mourinho last season with a variety of players occupying the role throughout the campaign.
Luke Shaw was supposed to be the long-term incumbent but the youngster has suffered from injury problems since moving to Old Trafford and he failed to win over Mourinho last season with the 21-year-old’s attitude called in to question.
It means the ‘Special One’ is looking for a new left-back and the Express are citing a report from Don Balon that claims United are plotting an audacious swoop for Barcelona star Jordi Alba.
The Spanish outlet states that Mourinho is a huge fan of the 28-year-old and is already putting the ground work in to a deal as he’s ‘very serious’ about luring Alba to Old Trafford this summer.
No doubt Barcelona will try to resist all attempts from United to snatch Alba as he’s developed in to a key player since moving to the Nou Camp from Valencia in the summer of 2012.
The Spanish international has made almost 200 appearances and helped the Catalans win three La Liga titles and a Champions League as well as a number of other domestic trophies during his five years at the club.
Alba is undoubtedly one of the best left-backs in the world right now so obviously he’d be a superb signing if United could somehow pull off a deal this summer.

However, new Barca boss Ernesto Valverde will do all he can to keep hold of the full-back as he looks to rebuild his squad and I don’t think United stand too much of a chance of persuading the Spaniard’s to cash-in.
