Managers are now pressing ahead with their plans for the summer transfer window so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip from around the globe. Today, Man Utd are closing-in on Fabinho….
Manchester United are expected to complete the signing of Monaco midfielder Fabinho over the coming days as Jose Mourinho looks to wrap-up his second new addition of the summer, according to a report in the Express.
Mourinho is gearing-up for a busy few months in the transfer market as he looks to build a squad capable of competing in the Premier League and Champions League next season.
After capturing centre-back Victor Lindelof from Benfica, the United boss is ready to turn his attention to strengthening his options in midfield as a long-term replacement for Michael Carrick is needed.
While the Guardian report that Nemanja Matic is close to securing a move to Old Trafford from Chelsea, the Express are carrying quotes from Emanuele Giulianelli that suggest Fabinho is the man heading for United.
The Italian reporter has said for some time that Fabinho is close to joining the Red Devils and he’s now claimed that the Brazilian international will finally seal the move over the coming days.
Giulianelli is quoted by the Express as saying:
“Why am I so confident about the fact that Fabinho will join Manchester United? Because no other club can take him,”
“Juventus are diverting their attentions to other players, like Matteo Darmian of United and Real Madrid’s Danilo.
“Manchester City won’t take him and, of course, Monaco won’t sell a key player to their rivals Paris Saint Germain.
“We just have to be patient. Manchester United have the habit of announcing new players when the stock market is high. So in a few days he will be a Red Devil, be confident United fans.”
The journalist doesn’t disclose any figures of this proposed deal but the Mirror claimed late last week that United had agreed a £35m fee with Monaco for Fabinho’s signature with the Manchester giants paying £31m up front and a further £4m in add ons.
Fabinho made his name as a right-back but excelled in a holding midfield role last season to help Leonardo Jardin’s side clinch the Ligue 1 title ahead of PSG.
When quizzed about the speculation, Fabinho told ESPN Brazil that he’d love to work under a manager like Mourinho. Fabinho is quoted as saying by the Express.
“I would also like to work with great managers to learn more about football, learn new things.”
“Mourinho, too. He is an excellent manager. No doubt.”
We’ll have to wait and see how things progress over the coming days but it’s difficult to know what to believe right now as conflicting reports suggest both Matic and Fabinho are destined to join United any day now.

Of course there is a chance Mourinho is after both players but I personally don’t see him bringing in two central midfielders to compete for the same position, so it remains to be seen which of Matic or Fabinho will end up at Old Trafford.
