Manchester United have been linked with a swoop for Thomas Muller after James Rodriguez sealed a two-year loan move to Bayern Munich, according to a report in the Express.
Jose Mourinho kicked off his summer spending with the signing of centre-back Victor Lindelof before snapping-up striker Romelu Lukaku in an initial £75m deal from Everton earlier this week.
However, the United boss knows he needs to further strengthen his squad if they are to be serious title contenders next season and adding more goals has to be a priority as the Red Devils only registered 54 times in the league last season.
Nineteen of those came from Zlatan Ibrahimovic – who’s now left the club – while Wayne Rooney has also re-joined Everton so Mourinho is being tipped to bring in another striker this summer and it looks as though Muller could be on his radar.
The Express are citing a report coming from the Mirror that suggests United may now renew their interest in Muller after Rodriguez sealed a two-year loan move to Bayern from Real Madrid.
The Colombian international’s arrival will put further pressure on Muller’s place at the Allianz Arena and the newspaper suggests he could be sacrificed after starting around half of Bayern’s games last season.
Muller has been with Bayern since he was a child but last year was one of the worse seasons of his career as he scored just 5 league goals and struggled to make an impact under Carlo Ancelotti.
It’s led to speculation that the 27-year-old could finally seek a new challenge and it seems United could be ready to offer him a fresh start here in the Premier League having previously tried to lure him to England.
Obviously things are at a very early stage so we’ll have to see if the rumours intensify over the coming weeks but I think Muller would be a superb signing for United if they could pull it off.

The German international is capable of playing anywhere across the attacking positions, including up front, so his versatility would be a useful asset for Mourinho, not to mention he’s a hugely talented forward who’d add real quality to the United squad.
