Man Utd Boss Confirms Injury Boost Ahead Of Crucial Tottenham Showdown
Jose Mourinho has confirmed Phil Jones is expected to be fit for Manchester United’s Premier League clash against Tottenham this weekend.
Jose Mourinho has confirmed Phil Jones is expected to be fit for Manchester United’s Premier League clash against Tottenham this weekend.
Jones limped out of United’s surprise 2-1 defeat at Huddersfield Town last weekend after picking up a knock midway through the first half at the John Smith’s Stadium.
The England international wasn’t expected to be involved against Swansea City last night but he travelled to the Liberty Stadium and was named on the bench.
Jones didn’t end up featuring during the 2-0 win with Jesse Lingard scoring both goals as United booked their place in the quarter finals of the Carabao Cup.
Speaking after the game, Mourinho confirmed that Jones only declared himself fit enough for the bench last night but the United boss expects him to be back in contention for a starting spot against Spurs.
In a further boost for the Red Devils, the Portuguese coach also revealed there were no fresh injury worries sustained at the Liberty Stadium but Mourinho is still unsure whether any of his other injured players will be back for Saturday.
Mourinho told ManUtd.com:
“It was quite comfortable and no injuries. So a good day for us.
“I think Jones will be [back] because, today, he was on the bench and he told me he will be ready in case I need him. So I believe he’ll be even better for Saturday.
“Apart from that, I have no news and no hopes [for any other players].”
Jones’ availability against Spurs will be a big boost for United as Eric Bailly and Marcos Rojo are still not 100% fit while Victor Lindelof has struggled for form this season.
United welcome Tottenham to Old Trafford this weekend with the two clubs sitting level on points in second position in the table so Saturday’s showdown will have a big say in their title aspirations.
