Man Utd team news update: OGS offers positive news on duo but 6 players remain out
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has offered a positive update on two players but 6 others will miss Manchester United’s clash with Southampton tomorrow.
Manchester United will be looking to maintain the pressure on the top four with a win over Southampton at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.
Ahead of the game, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been speaking to the media at his pre-match press conference this morning and he’s provided a team news and injury update including the latest on the fitness of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.
The United boss was pleased to confirm that Rashford is now pushing for a recall to the starting eleven tomorrow after shacking off an ankle injury that he sustained during the 0-0 draw with Liverpool last weekend.
The England striker was still carrying the knock in midweek when he made a cameo appearance off the bench against Crystal Palace but Solskjaer says Rashford is now likely to start against Southampton tomorrow afternoon.
There is also positive news on Martial as the attacker is close to making his return from a groin injury that’s kept him out of the last three matches. The United boss hasn’t ruled Martial out of this weekend’s game but insists he won’t take any risks with players that aren’t fully fit.
Solskjaer is quoted by the Manchester Evening News as saying today:
“It’s the last session today but we’re not going take any risks. Maybe Anthony, but it might just be a few more days before he’s ready, so probably the squad will look similar to what it did at Wednesday.
“He (Rashford) still felt it Wednesday night but he’ll be ready I’ll probably start him.”
“You do have a plan but then you get suspensions, injuries. That one injury or one suspension might change the whole dynamic. It’s a matter of seeing who’s available now. Wednesday night at Selhurst Park is a tough one and then Friday morning still.
“So not too much recovery time. We’ll make our minds up tonight.”
It means Juan Mata, Ander Herrera and Jesse Lingard will remain on the sidelines with hamstring injuries that they sustained against Liverpool last weekend while Nemanja Matic is also still out with his own muscle problem.
Phil Jones could return from illness but Matteo Darmian and Antonio Valencia are still working their way back to full fitness so Man Utd will be without at least six players for the visit of Southampton this weekend.
