Liverpool have stepped-up their interest in signing Nicolas Pepe and are close to tabling a formal offer worth around £70m for the Lille attacker, according to L’Equipe.
Pepe has emerged as one of the most exciting young forwards in French football since joining Lille from Angers in 2017 and he enhanced his reputation by providing 23 goals and 12 assists in just 41 appearances in all competitions last season.
The 23-year-old’s superb form has reportedly attracted interest from a whole host of European clubs with Liverpool among those to be strongly linked with a swoop for the Ivory Coast international this summer.
It looks like Jurgen Klopp is ready to formalise his interest as L’Equipe are reporting today that Liverpool have ‘accelerated’ their pursuit of Pepe after making him one of their key summer transfer targets.
The French outlet says Liverpool are close to offering a deal worth around £70m [€80m] excluding bonuses which would meet Lille’s asking price for the goal-scoring attacker, so a deal could be on the cards soon.
This report comes off the back of a claim made by Daily Record journalist Duncan Castles on the Transfer Window podcast last week where he said Liverpool were in talks with Pepe’s representatives about a move to Anfield.
We’ll have to wait and see how things evolve as there are other clubs reportedly in the running for his signature but Pepe would be a superb addition to the Liverpool squad if they could manage to get a deal over the line.
The Ivorian is known for his explosive pace and he’s able to play up front or out on the right wing so he’d give Klopp another top class goal threat in the final third if Pepe joined the European Champions over the coming weeks.

Liverpool already have a world class front three but Klopp knows he needs to bring in support for the likes of Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino and I think Pepe would be an ideal signing for the Reds.
