Man Utd vs Liverpool: Betting preview with odds, tips and predictions
Manchester United will look to get back to winning ways when they welcome Liverpool to Old Trafford tonight. Here is a betting preview
Manchester United will look to get back to winning ways when they welcome Liverpool to Old Trafford tonight.
The game had to be re-arranged after protests from United fans forced the original match to be postponed and it’s left the Manchester giants having to play four games in the space of just eight days.
Man Utd still sit second in the table despite losing to third-placed Leicester City 2-1 at Old Trafford on Tuesday night so victory this evening would cement their place in the top two with just two games remaining.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer came under fire for fielding a weakened team during the defeat to Leicester and it was Liverpool fans who were most aggrieved as it put a dent in their hopes of finishing in the top four.
Liverpool currently sit sixth – seven points off Chelsea and nine adrift of Leicester with two games in hand – so Jurgen Klopp’s side desperately need a positive result against Man Utd if they want to be in the Champions League next season.
Betting odds
There is likely to be a lot of interest in the betting markets as this is one of the biggest games of the season so it’s important to get the best odds available. You should check out a list of all betting sites in the UK and choose the one which is offering the best odds for your chosen bet before departing with your hard earned money.
Perhaps surprisingly, Liverpool are seen as the narrow 13/10 favourites with the bookmakers to win tonight. The draw is available at 11/4 while United can be backed at 19/10. Perhaps the bookies feel the tough schedule will catch up with the Man Utd players tonight but 19/10 are decent odds for the hosts.
The Red Devils rested most of their key players on Tuesday so I don’t see fatigue as being a major issue and we can’t forget how inconsistent Liverpool have been. A 2-1 Manchester United win looks tempting at odds of 9/1.
Team news
Man Utd will continue to be without Anthony Martial, Phil Jones, Dan James and captain Harry Maguire due to injury issues.
However, Solskjaer is set to make wholesale changes with the likes of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof, Luke Shaw, Fred, Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford, Paul Pogba and Edinson Cavani expected to be recalled.
As for Liverpool, they have no fresh injury concerns to worry about but Klopp has confirmed Jordan Henderson is unlikely to play again this season due to a groin injury.
Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Joel Matip, Ozan Kabak, Ben Davies, James Milner and Divock Origi are also missing while Naby Keita remains a doubt.
Prediction
Manchester United have lost just one of their last 15 home games against Liverpool in all competitions so they’ll be looking to maintain that excellent record tonight. The pressure is on Liverpool to get a positive result as they desperately chase a top four finish and that may play into United’s hands as they can sit back and hit them on the counter-attack. Therefore, we predict Man Utd 2-1 Liverpool
